Since Joe Theismann - who left ND in 1970 - our program has developed only 3 quarterbacks who have started more than 20 NFL games. They are Joe Montana, Steve Beuerlein, and Rick Mirer.
Quinn, Clausen, and Kizer had brief starting stints, but didn’t reach that mark.
Obviously, the Lou Holtz offensive system didn’t lend itself to developing NFL QBs. But it’s absolutely astonishing how little success - comparatively speaking - our program has had over the past few decades developing quarterbacks. Truly shocking.
