Supposedly the reason ND won't join the ACC in football is the money they are getting from their deal with NBC. Why then are they not investing that money in new facilities and other enhancements that would keep them up to par with what's going on across the country with other schools, like Clemson? When it comes down to it, they are a private school but unlike other private schools, they have that NBC deal. I guess I'm just not getting why they aren't investing that money or even part of it in facilities that will keep their program relevant. They are not relevant right now. I agree with the article's assessment with Notre Dame seemingly content to live off their name and their past without regard to the future.

Clemson fan here.....looking forward our matchup in 2020. Should be another instant classic! Go Tigers!

You don't know by now? The ND administration does not care about the football program. As long as the seats are full every home game there will be no effort to actually push for anything to be great within the program. Football is looked as a cash cow only and the admin. laughs all the way to bank every year.

I respect T23's opinion but I disagree. ND has just spent $400mm on making the football stadium the center point for the campus. Over the last couple of years the administration has made a massive upgrade to the stadium. My understanding is that ND is about to embark on new facilities for football. No offense allteamball, but the fact that you are on an ND site at a time when Clemson isn't playing the Irish proves just how relevant ND is. Nothing against Clemson but I've never visited a Clemson board. ND has a national brand. Keep thinking about ND. We love it! Go Irish!!

This is Notre Disney ... university administrators threw in the towel on actually competing for national championships decades ago

The NBC deal is pretty bad when compared to current power 5/ESPN contracts (and that's after all the programs in the conference get their cut).

ND makes most of their money off of ticket sales (every game is sold out with escalating ticket prices) and licensing deals.

Want to be reminded about the 4 horsemen and the Knute days of yore? Notre Disney is the place to go. Want to watch championship/elite modern collegiate football and institutions that support that level of play ? Well, then, let's just say you are in the wrong place.

how much of the additions to the facility were additions primarily focusing on the ND athletic departments and in particularly the football program. That was a lot of construction.

I totally agree! They should immediately upgrade the football program and add 100 more classrooms!

The 400 million project is a smoke and Mirror. Its academic driven...It just makes the stadium look bigger but does nothing for football.

but, I bet 400,000,000 is a number cited by the recruiting staff as if it does indeed go as improvements to the stadium and football facilities. So yea, smoke & mirrors is a somewhat accurate descriptive.

I read somewhere (sorry, can't remember well enough to quote my sources), that a primarily academic building is exempt from certain taxes while an athletic building is not. So they've got that going for them.

Have you heard of The Gug?

^^^^Exactly. The stadium is 90% about academics. 10% Jumbotron. I don't think P57 knows the in's and out's like some of us do on here. ND football is going nowhere. It's not my decision. It's the BOT, admin, Jack, and Jenkins making that call.

Have you head of The Gug?
Ummmmmmmm, John? That facility is one of the oldest, smallest and obsolete in major D1A. The Loftus is pathetic at this point too. GVSU has a better indoor field/track. For the money ND has and football brings in the facilities are not good. At least the fluff Jumbotron is in.

^ the fans, the staff, the alumni, the Administration all suffer from a sense of entitlement; nothing stays the same. We are now into a 2nd generation that has not seen ND as a perennial football power.

The attitude towards the football program is reflected in the failure act or to do the things necessary to compete at the highest level. The gap is not closing, but gets wider each succeeding season.

Love the jumbotron and not just because the Ndnation alums were so outraged.

31 loses in 7 years is hard to stomach. It appears ND is giving him 3 years to turn it around. You don't give 3 year contracts to new coaching hires; if the head coach faces a one and done situation.

And who told you that? If it was about money we would have joined the Big 10 a few years ago. It's not.

Are you including yourself in that group? I hope not.

If ND was obsessed by money as some speculate; then why haven't they sold advertising rights around campus and historic Notre Dame Stadium?

It could still be about money. Joining the Big Ten would have boosted TV & bowl money but would have hurt donations.

Damn those academics! The Administration really needs to update its priorities!
Why isn't ND in the Ivy League then? It's where they belong academically and athletically. ND is academics, liberalism, hockey and lacrosse. Perfect fit.

Because they take in about 2.5 million dollars per home game just on parking fees alone.

But really, it's simple, they're trying to at least keep the place classy looking. The ads at other stadiums are gaudy.

Why do you bother rooting for ND then?

I will again when they get back to what they used to be about. I thought you were the almighty liberal that was so tolerant of other viewpoints? Oh that's right you're all about freedom of speech only when you agree with what's being stated by the other person. #snowflake

Because girly glasses Jack knows all he has to do is get it back to what Kelly is good at, 8-4. 90% of fans are excited about that record.

What did I say that was "intolerant" of you?

All you do on here is rant about how much you dislike ND, so I'm genuinely curious as to why you bother to follow them.

Why not be known as both a powerhouse in academics AND football. It can be done. ND was 12-0 and 10-3 recently and Stanford has been extremely successful recently. ND can be on top again. Defensively, the Irish will be challenged. Offensively, I believe we're there.

Most people would call you a fair weather fan, or bandwagon fan. Either way, ND doesn't need you!

Then why are you posting here ? You are obviously not a Notre Dame supporter.

It's a fair question.

Still don't see why ND can't be a fb factory and academic bastion. The two are not mutually exclusive.
To be a "football factory", you need to accept recruits using the NCAA minimum standards and provide a curriculum whereby students with that level of academic credentials can stay eligible. So yeah, they are pretty much mutually exclusive.
