We have the most talent since the Holtz era. Athletic, good lines on offense and defense, good QB play, the running backs....all great stuff.
We are very deep on offense. Not so much on defense yet, but getting there.
The coaching. Offensively I think we are a great offense between the 20's. BK's offense is nearly impossible to defend between the 20's. The red zone, particularly the 10 yard in mark becomes very interesting. Things become much more clogged there. This has been an issue for a while. It's definitely a BK issue. On the same note it was nice to see BK change it up in the second half utilizing Kizer and his frame running. His play call on the final touchdown was marvelous. Fake handoff naked bootleg....that was great. Those type of things he doesn't do enough of. I'm not sure if he wants prettier touchdowns or what but they all count as 6 points. There isn't a special touchdown for style points.
The defense. I won't say we give up too many big plays because every team gives up those types of plays in present day college football but there are some glaring issues on defense.
First and worst issue is the tackling. This has been a year long theme but this is the worst tackling Irish team I've ever seen. I don't know how it's being worked on in practice or the message to the players about it, either way it's wrong.
The one player..and only player who tackles correctly is Sheldon Day. He is so big he could be excused at times for tackling too high ...but he gets low, wraps up, finishes.
BVG and his schemes. Possibly too complex for the collegiate athlete who can't devote 6 hrs on video then hit the field every day? Maybe.
Ironically the Irish at times are a victim of their own success on offense. We can score so quickly our defense is always back out on the field so quickly.
Going forward I think BK needs to do some real reflection on how he calls red zone offense. He leads in some very bad stats within the red zone.
Defensively I think needs a complete overhaul.
We can compete with anyone offensively.
Defensively is where the separation is between the upper echelon and us.
How this is addressed will be interesting.
