I have been following the Tez Walker situation at North Carolina, and I must say, I find the NCAA's position puzzling at best, and indefensible at worst. With all the stuff that is going on with the transfer portal, it is baffling to me that the NCAA chose to draw a line in the sand with Walker's case, especially when the two previous schools he was enrolled at, NC Central and Kent State, filed waivers in support of Walker being eligible this year. What a strange decision the NCAA made.

I haven't been following it, but they followed the rules no? He was trying to transfer to a 2nd team. The rule is you have to sit out a year then correct?

I dont know his situation but everyone is going to say family situation or mental situation. Who doesnt have one of those? Every family or person has issues. Why even have the rule if you arent going to follow it

The issue was that Walker never played any football at the first school he enrolled at, NC Central, because its season got cancelled due to the pandemic. Then he transferred to Kent State and played two seasons there. Walker then decided to transfer to UNC because of a coaching change at Kent State and to be closer to his grandmother, who had played a significant role in raising him. She is apparently very ill and cannot travel to see him play. I suppose the "mental health" argument is subject to manipulation and abuse, but I understand Kent State supported Walker's petition for an exception, and it seemed genuine in Walker's case. So while the NCAA was possibly following the letter of the law, this certainly seemed like a situation where it could have done the right thing and made an exception.

It doesnt matter if he played or not, he still enrolled and was on scholarship. And he transferred. This is still his 2nd transfer. I dont see the issue here, the ncaa is just enforcing a rule that needs to be a rule.

I always thought Walter from The Big Lebowski was a fictional character. I'm so delighted to know that he's real and posting here on our forum. "This isn't 'Nam...there are rules!" 🤣

NCAA is a joke with no real control. This is the only power they have. When will the power 5 schools tell the NCAA to pound sand?

It is a rule that should not be rigidly and inflexibly applied. Otherwise, why would there be exceptions to the rule recognized for medical or safety reasons? I think the NCAA badly missed the mark on this, and you see it differently. We have a difference of opinion on it, and that's ok. I have grandchildren; I am guessing you do not?

Should have been a waiver/exception made in this case. NCAA screwed the pooch on this

Not the first time with North Carolina. Maybe they are trying to make up for doing nothing last time when there was a lot by doing something this time when there is nothing.

I'm not old enough for that.

Every family has a health problem and you can always use mental health as an excuse

People bang on the ncaa for not enforcing rules and letting transfers run amuck. Then they bang on them for not letting guys break the rules. And the ncaa rightfully deserves the critics

But they enforced the rule here. And they should do it more often. No problem with them enforcing this rule.

Everyone who wants to transfer a 2nd time is going to use these 2 excuses. I'm glad the ncaa actually bowed up on a rule. It's about time

I feel for him. If there was a reason for an exception that would be it, yet, the corruption going on with NIL and the portal continues.

The NCAA gave an extra year of eligibility to athletes due to the impact of COVID-19 during the 2020-21 season. Now here is a kid who didn't play at all during his first season at NC Central because its entire schedule was cancelled due to the pandemic, and the NCAA wants to hold that against him? Makes no sense at all. I guess the NCAA giveth, and the NCAA takes away. In my view the NCAA has acted very capriciously here. And Walker didn't "break" any rules; he applied for a waiver and it was denied. That is far different from breaking a rule.

He still tranferred. He could have stayed there but decided to leave away from his family. He didnt break any rules. Never said he did. And the ncaa didnt either. They just enforced their rule. It's about time in my opinion

I have no real knowledge of the NCAA transfer policies but how in the Hell is JT Daniel’s on his 4th school? Guys was at USC, UGA, WVU, and now Rice.

I don’t know if he’s sat for seasons or not though, I’ll have to look up his stats and see.

It's ridiculous. I know he was a graduate transfer so he was able to transfer the 2nd time without sitting. I dont know if that continues because he's a graduate he can transfer without sitting.

It's beyond nuts
