MZ or EG?

Or as some prefer...EG or MZ? Apparently EG has "showed up" this spring and is doing very well....as is MZ. If this ends this way it will be VERY GOOD for ND if both continue to perform well. A One-two punch worked well vs lsu and could continue too. Thereby giving ND two quality QB's in case of Injury. Or turnovers.

I still think MZ is the better runner...but maybe EG is the way better passer. Hopefully BK says simply--he has TWO starters and both will play...a lot.

clear from the coach speak, 'passing rules'; the LSU game aside, I think the offense will look just like the offense we have been seeing; except the talent is deeper and better; and the OL is far better (although that 'better' is more at run blocking).

So MZ will not start. The staff has put EG through myriads of ball control drills. Let's see what happens under fire and when the going gets tough. That will be the acid test. Fans excited about the addition of Sanford have to realize that there is still Denbrock, Kelly and Quinn from the "airborne crew". That means "passing's the first option".

No matter: ND will get 30+ most games, and the season will depend on the defensive improvements.

Have we had this discussion this before?
 
I remember last season as I was walking back to the White Lot listening to one of BKs post game presser, he was adamant about EG continuously going through ball handling drills from the start and how the staff is perplexed on how EG just does not follow what he has been drilled. Now, let's go forward to 2015 and I hear the same about EG and ball handling drills. What makes this time any different from what we have heard before? Maturity? Fear of riding the pine? Wishful thinking by the staff? As a fan I would hope that if EG is the starter on opening day he is given a very short leash in regards to unnecessary and self inflicted turnovers by our QB. Taking a chapter from the pages of Mr Obvious, turnovers, suspensions, and injuries killed an otherwise promising season.

In the short video I saw, MZ ran it once and EG ran it once. When MZ got vertical he tucked the ball against his body. When EG got vertical he still held it out away from his body. I don't care who starts. May the best man win, but EG has got to learn to tuck the ball when he runs. As a senior, he should've learned that years ago.

I was afraid of this and I had this exact thing in mind when posting my comment.
 
I trust the coaches to make the best decision for winning games. I also think there will be a much quicker hook this year for a starter that makes a bunch of mental mistakes.

I prefer MZ's style and his bravado, but I admit that the first 6 games under Golson last year were pretty awesome to watch.

You never want your QB playing scared but after the LSU game EG knows sloppy play and turnovers won't be tolerated this season. No competition like internal competition to bring out the best. MZ won't start but will play every week at least a quarter or more

A little premature to declare passing rules and no change on offensive game plans. Yes, passing is dominant in the college game, but the best teams have really strong complimentary running attacks. Some use the pass to open the running game, and some visa versa. I think we'll see a ND team committed to mixing it up, and one that is capable of running for first downs on critical short yardage situations, and in the red zone.

I think as defenses evolve to counter spread option principles, there is a weakness against smash-mouth running up the middle. Urban Meyer exploited it to perfection. I didn't watch much BSU football this year, but in the game or two I did watch they did the same thing. Their RB reminded me a little of Marshawn Lynch.
 
Said it two yrs ago - said it a yr ago and I'll say it now ND's success on the ground and the frequency that they run the ball wiil be predicated on how well the OL plays . If they are high level ND will have two 800 + RB's . If not look for a healthy dose of passing the football .

Just a hunch but the defense might be very very good this season and if ND puts up 35 ppg this will be a final four team as Coach Holtz predicted Dec 31st
 
Yup the O-line this year will be much much better than last year's...

I trust Coach Kelly on the other question.

I think you're spot on. I believe if golson starts he will be on a very short leash. zaire has earned the trust of his coaches. that wasn't the case all of last year.

well, seems like a lot of posters/media/fans have questioned the QB handling; but you probably still have to fingers in your ears and blinders on; I do remember your staunch support of Weis with similar comment! Pathetic: think - it won't harm you!

good luck finding a post where I supported weis. not saying others haven't questioned Kelly. just pointing out that none of us are as qualified to make said decisions. you want pathetic try the mirror.
 
Trusting Kelly and his staff to make the best football decisions does not represent a lack of individual thought by posters. Silly perspective. Kelly and his staff know football at a level far beyond any of us, and they are with these young men for hours on a near daily basis, and know their pulse. Yes, they make mistakes and there's nothing wrong with second guessing them or suggesting different views, but doing so does not necessarily reflect good "thinking", nor should it give license to call out posters who "think" trusting Kelly is a better course.

"You're OUT ! " Nor does is it reasonable to keep an hoss like MZ disengaged when he can be in the game productive and a rally for the team. Both will play a lot. They a DUO

I think a lot depends on what type of football one prefers.. My choice is run , run, run. And control the line of scrimmage. Certainly, we also need a solid passing game, but smash mouth football is my choice.
Therefore, my choice would be MZ.. With MZ teams must always respect the run . Golson is not even close as a runner.
I think that Coach Kelly has been here long enough to show that he is a pass first kind of coach, so Golson seems to be his choice ?
Kelly also seems to favor certain QB's and have a quick hook for other QB's ?
Should be an interesting season ?

smash mouth football.....the choice would be MZ...... and it will be... early season. EG will play in every game even if MZ is the starter and visa versa
 
I'm going with Gunner Kiel. Oh, wait, coach Kelly ran him off because EG was so untouchable. Sixth year at ND and the head coach still can't develop a QB. It's embarrassing.

If teams have to respect the pass more wouldn't it then make it easier to control the line of scrimmage and establish a "smash mouth" style running game? I am not sold on the idea that because MZ is a better runner that means an EG led offense can't/won't be able to establish a dominant running attack.

I don't care who starts but I believe that whoever is #1 will not be splitting too much time with the other. Not sure where the belief that splitting time between two QB's is desirable, it has historically rarely worked in the modern era.

The main problem with two quarterbacks is attitude. It looks like EG is in for the wins, whatever it takes this season or he would be leaving. If MZ can buy in to the idea, which he will eventually have no choice, he can be the main guy in the short pass, smash mouth, run first game that this team will be geared to play great, but EG can relieve in situations where the scramble play maker two min offense is needed and for the long yardage third downs, 15 yard red zone high fades and an number of long bombs. If either guy has his bottom lip stuck out even once or shows a trend of carelessness - He sits.
 
Let's all just make excuses for the underachieving. Heaven forbid the overpaid coach develop a QB.

fair to say that ND is going to score points at 30+ ppg: the question is whether the defense can get enough stops.
The influence of Sanford and Gilmore will be huge factors; else it would be much of the same.
 
Smash mouth football of the 70's and 80's does not exist any longer. With the advent of the Spread Offense the guys who were lining up at Tailback and Fullback during the 70's and 80's are now lining up at LB and Safety.

With that type of athlete on defense you've got no prayer of running the football. Stanford,LSU and Wisconsin are the last of the dying breed. And all of those teams got bogged down several times last year when faced with a fast athletic defense. Even the ND defense which could not stop a nose bleed slowed down Stanford and LSU.

Sure Ohio State plays power football but they can throw the ball very effectively and they run the football out of 3 and 4 WR sets. The 2015 athlete on defense is to good to fight in a phone booth. But if you put them in space against other great athletes you've got a chance. Why? Because as much as the athlete on defense has improved, the fundamental tackling technique has gotten worse. Because of the pussification of practice routines,the modern day defender cannot tackle in space. As a result we are seeing teams like Baylor, Oregon and TCU putting up video game numbers.

I am a not contrary by scheme, the spread is by far the best way to attract athletes to your school and by far the best way to take advantage of the poor fundamentals but I would be contrary by banging and hitting religiously in practice. Stanford and Wisconsin have not had success because of their fossil schemes. They've had success because of their toughness. ND needs to get tougher but just out of the Spread.

I think that dominating the line of scrimmage and playing " SMASH Mouth Football" has more to do with having the right linemen, running backs,
And QB than with the type of formation ?
Last season, Golson looked great until teams stopped respecting the run, started blitzing , and then Golson looked like he was completely lost.
Turn overs after turnovers.
The team looked completely different with MZ at QB, he saw the openings and ran to daylight. He also was passing with accuracy, so
The opposition had to play both pass and run, and we indeed controlled the LOS and we were unstoppable.
In short, in the one game, comparing Golsont to MZ, MZ was by far the better runner, and his passing was certainly very accurate. As a college
QB , based upon the little that we got see MZ play , he seems to give ND offensive a big added dimension, running the ball, that Golson just has not shown .
I also agree that to play smash mouth successfully, a team must also have at least a decent passing game, but on the other hand a pure passing team must also have a decent running game,
One dimensional teams can not win against good well coached opposition.
