A couple things I strongly believe.
1) Had Everett Golson returned he would have started and had a really good season.
2) I still believe that none of the QB's, at their best, are as good as Golson is when he is at his best.
3) Notre Dame can certainly win with Malik Zaire as the quarterback
Golson leaving is not something I feel should be dismissed or have a "oh well, ND is better off" response. I don't necessarily agree with that. Golson is a talented QB (in my view) and I felt he made great strides in the spring.
Having said that, I also don't think this is the end of the world. I dont think it means all is lost. I actually dont even think my feeling on ND's record changes with this news.
We talked about this on today's podcast, which we hope to have up soon. But for all his faults and areas where more improvement is needed, the kid has a lot of tools. He's a leader, he oozes confidence and despite being unproven in most areas, he has proved to me that one thing is for sure, win or lose he wont be overwhelmed by the enormity of being the ND QB.
He will really need to be focused and motivated to keep improving his game. I will have an article up tomorrow talking about what he needs to do.
Finally, things like this tend to have one of two consequences. One is it creates uncertainty and fractures the team. The other is it unifies a team and helps the team maximize its potential by helping it establish an edge.
The fact there is no more QB battle is the one positive to come from all this.
My 2 cents
