Is this red zone package...
QB: DeShone Kizer
RB: Tarean Folston
WR(X): Torii Hunter
WR(W): Aliz'e Jones
TE: Durham Smythe
TE: Jacob Matuksa
I just love the balance of power and athleticism, with 3 TE's, and somebody who runs inside zone as well as Tarean, coupled with a TE like Aliz'e who can play that Eifert role on the perimeter.
- You force the defense to match personnel and play cover 0 outside, giving Hunter 1 on 1 matchups on slants, fades, in cuts, and a variety of screens to the perimeter, with tight ends blocking. Opposite Hunter you have Alize's 1 on 1 vs a corner in jump ball situations.
- You can pound inside zone with Folston and keep the free safety from coming hard into the mix because of Kizer's threat to pull the ball on the read and stress the edge of the defense. Even in a 1 on 1 with a safety inside the 5 yard line, I like our chances with a 6'4, 230lb quarterback on a free safety.
- Off the read option and inside zone looks you can also run a variety of play action passes that involve both Smythe and Matuska in the middle of the field. Run pass options where Kizer pulls the ball and heads to the perimeter puts the FS in a terrible bind because you can sneak an attached tight end out behind him, moving in Kizer's direction. I'll take Smythe being chased by a DE and Kizer in a run pass option to the perimeter, all day.
- I also expect to see more of what they use to do with TJ Jones. Motion Hunter into the backfield at times, or have him come on a jet sweep to the boundary, with Aliz'e blocking a corner and Smythe leveraging the edge, McGlinchey or Nelson climbing to cut off pursuit and Matuska shutting off the backside edge.
