1- the excitement and expectations were too high and for me, a guy who loves this school at my advanced age with health concerns, it’s a signal that my investment is not matched by the expertise and knowledge of this new head coach, so I am going to try and take a leave of absence from this. I am not a quitter. It’s just the smart thing for me to do

2- I knew in the late second quarter that we were in trouble. It hurts to say this - Freeman is a terrible head coach. Maybe he will become very good. But he stinks - and the proof is his decisions on the field and what he said after the game

—- During the game he did nothing The lack of a mobile QB can never ever be allowed at ND again. Coan is limited. Always has been. Painful to watch him throw away passes when receivers were covered that could be QB runs. The OSU QB shredded us with runs. And yet. Freeman does not put Buchner in. Tyler and any QB recruit should seriously consider playing elsewhere. We do not get QB talent or develop it here

His defense and one cornerback were horrendous. Defense was the second reason we lost. Freeman was the first reason and Our corner was actually playing for OSU. Worst I’ve seen and that includes Gary gray

—. Post game Freeman said things only a first time head coach would say. It’s damn scary to hear him say he would take our corner any day. The kid was in a sixties tv show — lost in space .

then he says Buchner was an option but maybe Rees wanted to roll with Coan. Freeman, you are the head coach Make a decision and put the mobile kid in who played in games all year. Give Okla a new look. Try something after 3 n outs. Jeez

n, freeman is flat out a nightmare. I like the guy a ton and that’s why his inexperience is the impetuous for me to take a stress free sabbatical
I could talk for weeks about how bad he was today and there are better things for me to do for my health Freeman says we lost because we did not execute. No we lost because of freeman. Man up and say that

And never forget - Brian Kelly screwed us. Put us in this position. Our choice? Lose this years recruits and next years or hire Freeman. Maybe there is a special kind of hell for self centered egotistical morons

How bad was Freeman? I can’t believe I am saying this but even Brian Kelly would never lose this game. Buchner would have been in in Q3 early.

Athletic Directors, such as Kevin white, Wadsworth and Swrabrick are an inept bunch Yet I can’t fault Jack. We were put in a pickle. I do think Freeman was the right hire at the time. He needs to grow a pair and become The Head Coach. Make decisions. Manage the game. What he does next will impact us all.

One more thing. I am disgusted with reporters who do not ask or follow up on questions It happens here in sports and it happens in politics. When someone like freeman says stupid shit, call them on it. “I’ll work harder.” Well you are gonna get the same result. Try smarter. “I’ll take my corner anyday”. The kid was burnt more than David Koresh at Waco, Texas. Say you need to teach coverage better. Say we like the effort but we need to coach better

if I am O’Leary or Mickens I would be in confession right now.

Based on his game performance and post game comments, I have zero confidence he can find his way

Freeman could learn quickly if he is smart. He has a network of solid coaches. Tressel and Cinci.

He has to learn to lean in when needed and make the tough call. I posted this 2 days ago, will his socialistic approach hurt , I believe it will. You need a good OC (we have one). We need a good DC (we do not have one).

Go find a DC that was over promoted to HC and bring him in. Herman, USC dude, soon to be Clark Lea.

Thr Freeman Experiment (not era) could end well if he is a fast learner, reaches into his roots and scores some salty old coaches that can also help him.

It’s one game. We all had these concerns. He can recruit. No doubt. That’s what kept BK from winning it all so he is +1 there.

Stock up, start making the tough calls over your OC/DC and learn. Let’s see how he learns. He learned as a DC. He will learn that players not coaches get fired for their calls. Only he does so make it.

I can agree with a lot of what you said, but not blaming Coan. The offense staked us to a 28 - 7 lead, he threw 5 TDs, 500+ yards, with zero running game. This loss was an epic choke job by the defense, and yes, that's on Freeman. I would have like to see TB get some series as well, but the offense still put up 35 points. That should have been plenty. Epic choke by the defense

One game does not make a career. To think one game proves you right, or wrong, is plain stupid.

This was typical ND in a major nationally televised big game. Proving once again that academia and CFB don't mix. We are at best a top 15 - 20 program.

TR should have tried to milk the clock under 45 in the half knowing they got the ball. Just one run would have worked

Buchner massively helps clock management in the second half when the D was gassed.

Those two can clean those issues up I’m sure. Go land some WR’s now.

It all comes down to recruiting. Our secondary, well at least those who played, are filled with 3* players, and it showed. Add to that, half our offensive production opted out, but we somehow still put up 35 points enough to win. The defense choked, both players and coaches, plain and simple. Along with our fickle and inconsistent kicker.

I'd say there are better times ahead, but I certainly question that, the game, for me, proved once again that academia and CFB just don't mix anymore. College football IMHO is in trouble, and this whole CFP can't really be called a playoff system when literally fewer than maybe 10 D1 teams have an honest, realistic, shot to get in.

I'm at a point where I say please don't tell me how the CFP decides it on the field. CFP is decided in the boardroom, and the network. And the NCAA does nothing. Why? $$$$$$
It's not a level playing field. The CFP "committee"? Well there's a joke; one need only to look at the CFP semi final games where the average margin of victory in the semi final games is 21, 21!!! For God's sake

Related to all this, for ND anyway, is ND needs to join a conference to give this generation of kids, ones who have zero connection to our history, something to play for, because it surely isn't for National Championships. We should at least be able to admit that

Moving to a 12 team playoff will help. Creating an NCAA insurance program that protects players “business decision” would also help massively.

We all saw what happened to Jaylon. In the end it didn’t create a huge issue but it was very close to being the biggest mistake of his life.

Freeman needs to add to this amazing last two classes. Close 22 with 2-3 surprises and go nail 23.

Did you watch the 2nd half? You couldn't have to make this post. The offense was every bit as bad as the defense. Not saying Coan is a bad guy but he is slow and like a statue out there. He also kept throwing the ball away instead of giving his receivers a chance for a catch. Defense was terrible, but so was offense. They just can't lose that game after the start we had.

Great stuff!

The bit about Tommy making the QB call in the post game presser is by far the biggest flag going up in all of this for me also. The question is does Freeman have the authority to be his boss and make that call in game or did Jack give that away in negotiations when he arranged this marriage. There was always a lot of context to the the story line of how Jack made sure the next HC would be willing to work with Tommy that on the surface seemed a little concerning. Time will tell, but it could be a mess?

I think they planned for yesterday to be a statement game where they show future QB and WR recruits a new wide open offense that they can see themself in, but the game played out in the worst possible way with the second half meltdown shadowing all the good things that occurred during the game.

The coming staff hires will be the next opportunity to see who Freeman is going to be in the early stages of his first HC opportunity. If he hits a home run with his DC hire, upgrades his WR coach, and things go as rumored at OL coach then we are back to making progress again

Yes I watched the game, and I saw we had zero running game, zero! So OKST adjusted at halftime to take away the out routes and their was no separation by the receivers. So you throw the ball away. If you've watched all year you'd have seen that, other than Mayer, we do not win contested throws. Coan is, and has always been, a pocket passer, so for that you blame him? That's ridiculous. Is Brady a statue? Was Marino a statue? This offense was completely one dimensional, zero running game. Any idea how difficult it is to win that way.

Coan had to make a couple plays at some point during the 2nd half drought. You can not quarterback a team that goes 3 and out for 7 or more consecutive possessions while your team is running a pass focused game plan and not shoulder a large part of the responsibility for the collapse.

For drive after drive he just could not make a play or didn’t even try so many times when he was asked to move a little and he immediately threw the ball away. If they defense adjusted he needs to be good enough to go somewhere else. You have to make p,has to win games like this and he got completely shut down for 2 quarters when the game plan ran completely through him. So ya, most of all Coan choked the game away.

Coan has not been able to put together a 10+ play drive all season. His scoring is always on big chunk plays. All year.

Both Buchner and Pyne have no problems creating plays themselves and were able to run the ball with the same OL as Coan had.

OK St even had their QB pull off multiple runs that were very effective against ND. Neither MF or TR thought of perhaps putting in one of their running QB's and doing the same thing?

Then MF says he needs to recruit better and coach up the players better in his PC in order to win. He had all the players he needed to win Saturday. But they were sitting on the bench.

Did you get a lot of wedgies in high school?

I mean, seriously, you want people to give you props for predicting that hiring a guy with no head coaching experience was a risky move?

That's about as insightful as telling us the moon is really not made out of cheese.

I absolutely am not blaming Coan. I am blaming freeman for not taking him out. Coan missed some key throws but played well. He has zero mobility and that cannot be acceptable for todays QB

Over the top emotional responses to a disappointing game. We gained 550 yards and scored 35 pts against the #3 defense in college football. There are numerous reasons why we lost, but to name just a few:

1. We missed Hamilton immensely. His overall play makes up for mistakes elsewhere in the defensive backfield, and he would have severely limited the huge QB scrambles.
2. We missed Williams and his ability to gain yards after contact. Diggs will be good and I look forward to seeing both him and Estime next season, but he was soft and tentative yesterday and we really needed Williams aggressive running and his vocal leadership…the later should not be underestimated.
3. Corner has been a problem position all season. Hart has been our best corner by a wide margin, and Lewis our worse by a large margin. We are decent with Bracy and Hart playing, and terrible with Bracy and Lewis, and yesterday we were predictably terrible. I can’t remember a corner having a worse game than Lewis had yesterday. OSU took advantage and simpLy abused him, and we had no answer.
4. Our tackling was the worse I’ve seen since the Florida St game. Bertrand in particular missed multiple tackles, and missed multiple opportunities for tackles for a loss.
5. Our defense was gassed, and their hurry up scheme killed our defensive linemen and our rotations.
6. Our OL play was outstanding in pass protection and pathetic in run blocking.

Coaching was a problem. Freeman was content to let his coordinators and staff do their thing, and never looked like he took control or ownership. The reality is we have been without a defensive coordinator since Freeman’s selection, and this hurt. Elston has shown to be a really good defensive line coach, but he looked lost as the acting defensive coordinator yesterday. We’ve also essentially been without an OL coach as well….and some would argue the same of our receivers coach. Freeman was severely hampered by not having his coaches in these key positions.

We knew that Freeman is a player’s coach and his style is to focus on the positives and to be a roll up the sleeves positive task master and voice of encouragement. His post game comments were consistent with this, but I don’t think anyone can seriously believe that he wouldn’t want some corner instead of Lewis. He wasn’t going to throw a Lewis under the bus, and we should appreciate this rather than believe he is clueless.

let’s face it. We don’t have all the pieces on defense to play his scheme. We knew this from game one. We played a top ten team that exploited these weaknesses. Let’s hold our judgement of Freeman until he has his coaches, his players, and a full season to put his imprint on the team.

As usual, you make excellent points - all except that the other replies are “over the top”

that diminishes other opinions. I know your point is to calm the seas and add perspective but fans have every right to be over the top because Freeman was “under the bar”. By any measure he was terrible Good game plan but no plan B. No adjustments. And not putting Buchner in is at the top of my list.
So let’s keep the focus on Freeman in this game. And he was wanting

One game does not make a career. To think one game proves you right, or wrong, is plain stupid.

This was typical ND in a major nationally televised big game. Proving once again that academia and CFB don't mix. We are at best a top 15 - 20 program.
What many don‘t understand is the difficulty in the leap from being an assistant to being the head coach.

The level of responsibilities increase exponentially.

Kelly clearly fooked us, then we compounded the dilemma by rushing the selection process.

One game revealed how unprepared Freeman was in making the transition from DC to HC.

You don’t know if he’s a good game planner, strategist, adjuster and field general and you don’t know if he’ll successfully develop the necessary qualities to become an elite head coach.

That’s why you don’t roll the dice and gamble with the University of Notre Dame’s football future.

How many times does ND have to fail at selecting a HC before they learn their lesson ?

Good morning Ski. I’m offering my opinions, and never my intent to diminish those of others. I was more emotional during yesterday’s game than I’ve been since the Miami debacle, and even my dog left me to stew and holler by myself. If I had posted yesterday after the game, my comments would have been emotionally charged and “over the top”. I’ve calmed down and really look forward to seeing the coaching staff Freeman assembles, and Spring ball takes on more importance this year than any in recent memory. Keep posting Ski and keep your love for all things ND front and center…I love it.

If we secure the on side kick and win with a field goal as time expires would we be so negative today ?

Well remember that Doerr missed a field goal wide right. We would have won by a point.
But we were lucky to be as close as we were. Okla should have scored another TD , maybe two.
we were terrible on D and no adjustments on O.
Even a squeaky W would be a bad start tho as you imply - better than the L

You morons are all the same, you take a rare exception and make it the rule, never accounting for the overwhelming number of failures that have occurred when a coordinator was promoted to the Head coaching position.

Gee, Ronald Reagan, the actor was elected President and he did a good job, so actors must make good Presidents, let’s push for actors to run for President ……. NOT

What’s wrong with your brains ?

That’s your absurd response to a total failure to make in game adjustments.

If your scenario played out would you still be willing to see and understand the glaring shortcomings in Freeman’s performance ?

You're the moron for using one game to judge a HC. That's as moronic as it gets. You do know that he was hired less than a month ago?

I think my biggest takeaway, besides the fact that the game really sucked and our coaches and a few key players failed miserably, is that by resigning when he did Brian Kelly missed his best opportunity to win that big game that was always just out of reach for him at ND.

And I really think if Kelly was on the sideline we would have won, but I don't think the game would have unfolded anything like it did yesterday. I believe he would have demanded that we try to establish the run early in the game, probably no later than our second possession. I doubt we would have scored 28 points in the first half, but I think he would have brought Buchner into the game and done enough to get our defense off the field once in awhile in the second half and had the team in position to win the game late.

I had a good chuckle in the days leading up to the game and reading some of the early posts that were almost giddy to see that Tommy Rees was finally free of Kelly's control. I saw pretty much the same offense we've seen all year except we didn't run in the first half.

Disclaimer: I still think Kelly is a weasel for the way he bolted on his team and a university that allowed him at least seven years of on-the-job training despite his shortcomings because let's face it, there is no way in hell Kelly was ready for the ND job when he was hired.

Disclaimer #2: The above comments, like those of everyone else on this site, reflect the opinions of this poster and are 100% conjecture.

Based on his game performance and post game comments, I have zero confidence he can find his way
Sounds like Matt Nagy. Keep coaching and sounding like him and Freeman very well be gone as well.BTW, he had no logical reason to back Lewis unless he was trying to be one of the boys that got him hired. Not one”reporter” asked the obvious follow up—-why? I agree Buchner should have seen playing time just to switch things up. I wising IIO was still around. Would love to see his take on yesterday’s loss.

It isn't fair to say Kelly screwed you. With early siging coaches are put in an impossible situation. They can leave during the season abandoning the team, leave immedialtey follwoing the manin season (like Kelly, Riley, Cristobal, etc.) or leave after early sigining screwing all therecruits. The Febraury siging period gave time for coaching changes with plenty of time for the recruits to react.

Stoops, Dabo, Riley, Jimbo, Kirby to name some

So we’re going to pay for on the job training.and it will be a heavy price.

I clearly stated that hiring an assistant with NO HC experience was a huge mistake !

Where are all of the geniuses who said I was wrong ?

While Kelly fooked us, we compounded the error by rushing the selection process.

We were short sighted and never took the long view.

Now we’re stuck.

Where are all of the guys who promoted Freeman as the next “coming” or “savior”
It’s one game. Nobody thought there was not going to be a learning curve.
