From Jeff Long chair of the committee "We discuss playing conditions, absolutely,” committee chair Jeff Long said in a teleconference with the media. “That was part of our discussion about Clemson and Notre Dame. Yeah, weather conditions, unusual plays, those are things that we discuss.”

Correct; ND as a 1 loss team, lost to a team higher in the standings. The problem is if Clemson falls will they take ND with them?

This setup was to try to get the 4 most worthy teams into a playoff, eliminate biases, but in fact it has made the process more subjective and the human factor far greater.
I expect there will be a lot of change to the process and selection committee.

I've been saying for a while now that quality of loss carries a lot of weight. some disagree but I think it showed last night.

One way of looking at it is by one of the criteria Vegas uses when setting lines. Generally the home team gets a few points or possibly more when playing at home, especially in CFB. The committee may be saying that if this game is played on a neutral site it could very well go the other way.

Don't be shocked though if once the Big 12 and Big 10 teams start playing each other if a couple teams jump ND in the rankings in the following weeks. It's so important for ND to look dominant against the next 3 opponents and I fear Pitt will give us another run for our money this weekend.

Thanks for the Link. Look at other posts ive made saying the same thing. 5 is meaningless. Its fools gold. That math is still not in our favor. No way we hold off a TCU or a Baylor that runs the table unless we get to the three spot.

BUT the point of my post, is that if it comes down to comparing a bunch of loss teams, our loss is going to be very hard to beat if clemson keeps winning. Not only cause who it was against and how close it was, but where it was played the conditions it was played in, even odd plays in the game. Good to know they look at all of that.

Perse,

I was really just adding the link to the thread because I liked the way Basketlax responded to the latest hairpulling multi-handled poster with a simple factual quote.

I was never on the playoff format train because I never saw a playoff selection process being any less controversial than the original or revised BCS formats. I think the committee is trying to be objective, but the endeavor is essentially subjective.

Its not a popular opinion, but I never had a problem with the "mythical" National Championship. I'm okay with the 1993 result - we shouldn't have choked on the way to the finish line. Arguing that my team is better than yours, based purely on biased opinion, is pretty much what college football fandom is about.

As far as predicting the future, I can't do that. We needed to beat Clemson if we were going to control our path to the playoffs. If Clemson is the only team to stumble on the way to the finish line, that will likely hurt us. That's why a quality loss is never, ever, ever as good as a quality win. Period. We need to secure the quality wins on our regular schedule because we don't have a championship redemption game. So now we face a lot of "what if's". Its good that the committee is considering the conditions for and the quality of the Clemson loss, but its obviously less helpful if Clemson falls.

National Championship math never changes - Play a strong schedule and win all your games. Otherwise you've got to watch the college football scoreboard Saturday afternoon while others determine your fate.

I have no clue what will happen. But I do know we have to win all of the next four games to have a shot a playoff roulette. I'll enjoying yelling at the TV while it plays out.

I am in total agreement with this.

I expect a big12 team to jump us unless they all beat up on each other. The Big 10 will as well and i expect it to be osu. it will be interesting to see what they do w/ bama should ole miss keep winning. if they dont even get to the sec championship game do they still get in? i think we need the big 12 to beat up on each other, b/c if clemson loses i dont know if they'd jump us over them given they beat us. Possible since it was at their place in adverse conditions, but they've looked better since i think..at least so far.

Uh, OSU is already ahead of us at # 3.

there are a lot of cries about tOSU's rating; but as undefeated reigning Champ they deserve to be there until they get beaten. You lose your title on the field.

I am thinking Ossie is just exaggerating to counter the 'sunshine pumpers' - I seriously doubt he is seriously serious. JMO: thats not they way to effectively counter an opinion. Make a valid better argument or contention.

sunshine pumpers........................reality.............................Ossie
