Below is a transcription of the first few minutes of the show. We went an hour to talk about the game though. Click play above to watch it, or you can listen to it wherever you get your podcasts.

Instant takeaways

“Great game, it was very business-like. It was a matter-of-fact performance which was good to see. Offensively speaking, it seemed like the training wheels are finally off. They are really starting to dig in and prepare for Clemson. They are starting to switch things up and pull out some trick plays, too.

“I was very pleased with the win. We have been in a building process. With the previous weeks’ opponents, they knew they were better than them and tried some things out and moved some personnel around. They did some different things offensively and schematically that I liked. It was just a very business-like approach this week. The team had more juice and more energy today. I really think getting away from home would change things for this team and give them some more juice and that is what we saw today. We saw more sustained energy and push which is nice to see. They still left some plays out there, which in a way is encouraging. Book was high on some throws today but all in all it was good to see the turnovers on defense and special teams. This was as close as we have seen to a complete performance.”

Who Flashed

“I think every week we come on here, and Michael Mayer comes up as a guy who flashed. I don’t know what to make of Tommy Tremble. You would think that coming into this season, Tremble would be a guy you create mismatches with, but he has been a blocker. That is great, I am not taking anything away from him there, but when Notre Dame was in ‘11’ personnel today with one running back and one tight end, it was Mayer that was in for the lion’s share of plays.

“Isaiah Foskey is a guy that is so fun to watch because he is not always going to get the sack or the knockdown but he knows what he is doing when he is rushing the passer.

“Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah always shows up, he seems to always make a couple splash plays every game.

“Ian Book flashed. He could have played better; he did sail a few balls.”

Areas of Improvement

“Robert Hainsey, the right tackle, has not played tremendously. I don’t want to throw him under the bus, though. He did not play well last week and had his hands full again tonight. He is a big guy and is not super athletic and is slow at times because he is so big.

“We don’t blitz our linebackers enough. They aren’t getting there enough for me.

“Book is so fun to talk about. He is an enigma almost. Your No. 1 complaint of Book is that he has happy feet and is jittery in the pocket. In the first half, I was happy to see him pull it down and run. When he does feel uncomfortable, some QBs step back but Book steps up and that lends itself to sailing some passes he shouldn’t.”
