McCaffrey skips on the team

I bet Jaylon wishes he would of instead of getting hurt and losing millions in a meaningless bowl game.

One way to look at it is that he is letting his team down... the other way is that why play in the Sun Bowl and risk your career for free..... especially when your school and the NCAA will be making money off of you.

CFB has turned into a huge business and this is just a smart business move.

I actually tend to agree, as much as I hate the idea of having bowl games include incomplete teams. We don't demand that coaches honor their commitment by finishing out the season, so I don't know why players should be treated differently.

That is his right. I bet Jaylon wished he had...all these bowl games ara money grab for the colleges, Seniors get squat for playing in them..I know all I got was a nice room and free food for a few days......ND got everything else.....
You never played past Pop Warner. No one here believes your bullshit stories. Or is your real name Walter Mitty?

Ewing - I have mixed feelings on it. If players miss because they want to protect themselves, then where does it end? Players can come up with a dozen reasons why they feel like not playing. I'll bet if they had made it to the playoffs McCaffrey would have played. So, since it's a "secondary" bowl, is that okay to walk?

I feel you're either a part of the team or you're not. Do you care about your brothers or do you only care about yourself? If you choose to skip, then you're going to have some explaining to do to NFL GMs and coaches as to why you're possibly not viewed as a team player.

My question is why isn't that same standard applied to coaches? They signed on for a contract of a certain length, probably told recruits that they would be there - and then will leave at the better opportunity.

I agree that there's a concern that this could spread (once out of playoff contention, maybe there's no more reason to play), but I would leave that to the discretion of the individual athlete and his teammates.

For what it's worth, I doubt NFL GM's and coaches have an issue with it. They get it. I'm guessing all of them would rather have their draft pool be the healthiest possible.

Yep, I agree. If he was playing in the playoffs than I would call bs. A useless bowl game, a very smart move. Don't blame him a bit

I think the fact that it is a secondary bowl makes it ok to not play..... It was not Stanford's goal at the beginning of the season to win the Sun Bowl?

I would guess their goal was to win the Pac 12 and make the playoffs.... neither happened so now they have a consolation prize to go to a minor bowl game and play. You could even say he is being a team player by allowing someone else to get some touches that normally doesn't... whether that be a Senior playing his last football game ever... or an underclassmen who will be returning next year and the game experience will help the team in 2017.

Another reason to reduce the number of bowl games of less importance.

In my opinion, given that football careers are shorter than all other major sports, and inherently way less healthy, and given the ridiculous amounts of billions generated in the american football industry (college & NFL), i think it's absolutely ridiculous that college age players have to waste 3+ good healthy years of nearly free labor before they can cash in on their multi-million-dollar skill set. the system is completely rigged in favor of NFL owners, coaches, college administrators, and corporate sponsors.

Yeah, and our pillars of excellence have rewarded themselves with a Feb. first class trip to Palm Beach to discuss our stellar 4-8 season.

They should be put up at the Econo lodge in Elkhart as this year's "reward"...

This is pathetic. The kid is going to be a special team guy. Quite the team guy!

And the thing is, a player's school might actually be losing money on the bowl game.

IMO, the powers that be, whoever they are, and ESPN's demand for the number of bowl games required to provide early morning through late night programming content for multiple cable channels (Plus ABC) have made the bowl games meaningless.

You spelled "strung up at" wrong.

I cannot believe this is even a debate. The guy is completely selling out his school. He is proving to be the complete opposite of a team player. If a kid in high school signs early to play at aMajor University in any sport, why should he even play his senior year? That is the logic behind this theory. The guy didn't make it to where he is without the help of his coaches and teammates. I promise you, this will hurt his draft status.

NFL guys won't give a crap about this. They use high draft picks on guys who have far worse character (and criminal) issues than this.

I can see both sides of the argument, but I don't blame him for making the decision that he has.

The NFL won't care. They understand it is a business decision.

If the playoffs ever expand to 8 or more teams, the remaining bowl games will be pretty much worthless.

“We understand that this was a very difficult decision. For three years Christian has not only been a great player, but a great teammate as well,” Stanford coach David Shaw said in a statement. “We wish him great success at the next level, as we continue our preparation for the Sun Bowl.”

What age do you think they should be able to go pro?

Slippery slope as there has been talk in the past about players skipping their junior season to make sure they are healthy. That is what comes next.

Gruff. We did not get together for lunch last week. You don't know me. I don't know you. Please see a psychiatrist.

I don't have a problem with it. Obviously, Jaylon's injury is playing a part in his reasoning, and Fournette's as well. McCaffery has already played a full 12-game season. So he doesn't owe Stanford any more than that. A bowl game is an optional exhibition game at the end of the season.

No. All posters do not agree with you. "Demand for me to response to my fellow Alumni"? What language is that? You are not talking Elm Street Junior High here, gruff.
