Matt Ryan Transfering

He probably wasn't going to be a star, but it will still hurt the team's depth next season.

Damn. That stings after the way he was shooting late in the season. He looked pissed that he wasn't playing much. If he was in the game instead of ice-cold VJ maybe ND pulls off the WVU game.

ND has to improve recruiting if they want to be among the big boys.

I have to say I like Brey's loyalty but this kid should have played more vs. WVa. Beachem was off vs Princeton and really not finding the rim vs. WVa. I would have started Ryan in that game but hey, I'm not Brey and he knows what he is doing.

Have to say it hurts to lose a shooter like Ryan. Seems like there is something else here.

Guess he just got tired of watching other guys jack air balls while he's sitting on the pine!

True -- and you can tell by his body language when they showed the bench.

But on the flip side -- you are now in position for major playing time (which is what he wants) -- why transfer and start over? Unless, his relationship with Brey is not all that??

Who knows the real story -- But, he is making a decision that he feels is best for him, so....good luck to him. Maybe he will meet ND in the tourny at some point.

I always thought he was a disappointment. Never seemed to get any better.

Hindsight is always 20/20.... would of been risky to pull VJ as a shooter like him just needs to hit one to get hot.... he just never did.

Not really a big loss, sure he was a 3-Point shooter, but he has zero athleticism and his defense was awful.
I like the kid, but really not concern with this. If he felt it was in his best interest to leave, then I'll respect that and wish him nothing but the best.

We all know a lot more goes into a winning basketball team than just assembling good shooters. Defense and communication, and setting screens, and fighting for rebounds and moving the ball, etc... all contribute to chemistry and team success. Brey's team's are noted for this. I thought Ryan might dig deep and show he was more than a 3 PT specialist and earn starting minutes next season, but he surely didn't this past season. Just don't accept that starting him against WVU in the tourney or playing him and benching one of the team's seasonlong stalwarts would have won the game. I think his negatives and impact on chemistry would have been a net negative in that game. Wish him well and look forward to his minutes going to an underclassman for a change.

I would prefer Brey hold the scholarhip for next year rather than use it for a 2 or 3 star player that might be a project.

Not a complete player and a defensive Liability. I think Mooney becomes a good player in the 4 spot

I disagree with the above posters view of Ryan. I agree he was not always a consistent shooter but he showed more ability to drive to the hoop and make assists and score toward the end of the season. He did what he could on defense but he is a true wing player by nature and he lacks some boxing out and big man defensive skills. Still, overall he outperformed Beachem and he was given way less minutes. Brey plays favorites so Ryan left. I said all along that Ryan's development was the key to ND going further in the tournament because I saw that Beachem was a hot or cold player and unfortunately more cold at the end of the season. Good competion among players brings out the best in everyone. If you know ahead of time that you can stink up the gym and still get 35 minutes playing time then you get players operating below potential. I also think some of the starters were either fatigued or banged up from a long grueling season which is another reason to go 10 deep. I dont expect much from Elijah Burns so next year we have little to no depth. I would rather focus on class of 2018 and try to land 2 to 3 top prospects that can contribute immediately similar to Kentucky. By the way, I heard from a good source that Kentucky cheats and I wont go any further with this.

News flash. Georgetown is eyeing Brey and Shaka Smart. Apparently they both said no.

He lost minutes to Pflueger. And there are other players here and coming next year who would also get minutes ahead of him. Transferring is his best option if he wants to play.

His leaving will open up a scholly for a possible transfer.

Brey burying talent on the bench is a Brey calling card ..... every year

Brey would be crazy to go to a school with basketball expectstions.
Yep. At ND no one cares about or watches the basketball team so there is no pressure on Brey to coach hard and succeed. He would most likely flop at a place where he was under a microscope.

REALLY??? That is news that no one expected from Calapari. Thanks for enlightening the board!

Absolutely no hard evidence to support that absurd opinion. You and bugjuice must get your drinking water from flint.

17 years isn't hard evidence ... LOL! .... now we are calling people names .... tsk tsk ... joining the old angry crowd ... birds of a feather .... :p

they would definitely get rid of him if his performance was like prior coaches

If you look at the sweet 16 from this year, if we had just 1 of the athletic big men that these other teams have multiples of, we would have been a title contender. How do we finish at or near the top of our conference yearly, constant TV exposure and we are ND, and our only 2 contributing true big men are Geben and Torres?
