There were a lot of rumors surrounding his actual reason to leave back in 96, some saying he was forced to retire because of shady recruiting tactics and the whole Kim Dumbar situation. I've also read that he resigned to pursue a head coaching position with the Minnesota Vikings following Dennis Green's dismissal. It's obvious he wanted to continue coaching because he went on to coach at South Carolina after ND. What's your take on it?

Second completely unrelated question: Do you remember a running back by the name of James Jackson in the mid 90's who went on to play at Miami after Edgerin James but before Clinton Portis? I'm only asking because he played one post graduate year at my high school Fork Union Military Academy and he was an absolute beast. I remember he was always talking about Notre Dame and how much he wanted to play for coach Holtz, and he had a schollarship offer from ND but ended up choosing UM. I just wanted to see if you had any inside scoop on his recruitment.

Thank! Happy new year.
