I don't think he comes back whether he wins 12 games or 0. If he does well, he will be out the door at the first chance he gets. If he does poorly, he will be canned.

Now that this is out of the way, it would be interesting to think about who's available for the 2018 season.

Fleck will undoubtedly end up somewhere besides WMU. I don't know if any major programs are seeking a head coach, so ND might still be a big move for him in 2018.

Besides Fleck, who do you have your sights on for the 2018 season?

I'll wait and see how 2017 plays out before trying to make ridiculous projections.

Frankly I think this a waste of time. Who we want likely isn't going to wind up being the next coach anyway.

I'd be happy with the next Ara at the same stage of his career before he took the ND job or the next Urbie before he went to FL. But I don't know who the name will be next year.

As ND has made poor hire after poor hire at the head coaching position over the past 20 years, we all want ND to knock the next hire out of the park.

But.....keep in mind that it is Swarbrick who will be making any potential head coaching hires - the same AD who not only hired Kelly but extended him by ( reportedly) 6 years!

Does anyone actually expect Swarbrick to make a great hire next time around?

I wouldn't get my hopes to high about that prediction if Jack stays as Athletic Director. Kelly was suppose to be the next big thing at ND. What a disappointment! I don't think ND would consider Fleck as coach. I'm not sure what will happen next, so tap the break or you're libel to be very disappointed. I hope Kelly's team goes 15-0 next year, but I'm not predicting nothing ever again. I expect nothing and I'll wait and see.

btw: as for the thread title: you can leave out the 'One and'; he has been done for years!

Can't believe anyone wants to seriously talk about who might be our HC in 2018. Prefer to discuss 2017 and the upside of Elko and Pulian, our chances for keeping our current committed recruits intact, our chances for adding a few key recruits to positions of need, etc... Will be cheering for our team to excel and the same of Kelly by extension. A great season record is the perfect tonic for Kelly to exit on his terms, but perhaps he is reinvigorated and wants to continue. Let's see how the season unfolds before concluding he is one and done!

So Purse are you finally off of the BK bandwagon? Hard to believe you have given up on him this quick.

could be a real possibility.. think about it..
if this season is a success then NFL teams will welcome him.. they all understand that coaching at ND is difficult..then 2016 can be looked as a just a bad season.. he's gone...

if the team crashes again.. he won't last the season.

The same poster who claims he would have hired David Shaw, Mike Macintyre, and Bill O'Brien back in 2009---all of whom were unknown assistants at the time. Imbecile.

Please give us your reasons for this first paragraph. From what I am told by those who have a say in the matter, Kelly is safe and we are fortunate to have him. Perhaps you should look elsewhere for your sources.

If Kelly is safe then ND is "done"; and as a result of having the misfortune of ever having had Kelly on campus that may be the case either way!

perhaps you should be objective! no sources are needed, just common sense and honesty!

Well, fans do have the right to discuss future schedules, players, and potential future coaches. I'm sure Bear fans are doing that right now though Fox seems to be ingrained in that job for at least next season. Anyway, I would rather focus on the current staff and players for 2017. It should be very interesting to say the least. Many changes. Lots of pressure. New QB. Changes to the stadium. Fun and interesting times in South Bend. Two great potential prime time home games with possibly another one added. I say we enjoy 2017 though a few find it almost impossible to enjoy anything related to ND football and that's a hard road to travel every waking moment of every waking hour.

No, no, no - we need to spend 100% of our time bad mouthing the HC and any assistant willing to stay or come here, and any player that is not leaving for the NFL or transferring. Because if you do not you are a Kelly apologist and moron.

actually he is 0-7 and incredibly NOT done?

Every game, every season he extends his record of NOT winning a major post season game or a NC!
No NDcoach has gone > 5 years w/o a NC and returned! Obviously Swarbrick is not well educated on ND football history.

I think since Holtz we missed on Barry Alvarez
(Tom Coughlin would have been amazing if timing was different)
and Urban Meyer was major disappointment.
(Those were 3 elites after Holtz's time)

As much as I have posted negatively about Kelly at times. I can say- I was happy when he was hired. I still root for the guy.

I hope the changes help this season
The defensive line will have to coached up big time. I'm hopeful but realistic.

I think most ND fans know that Kelly turning things around would be best and that the next coach whenever that may be has to be MORE successful than Kelly but who that person is isnt easy to figure out.

I do think BK leaves after next season and at this point I think it's mutually beneficial tor everyone involved. I think to last 7 years at ND in modern times, that seems like the shelf life for a coach here.

And if I'm being honest he's done a good, not great job. It wasn't a bad hire, just not as good as I had hoped. He's made really good hires this offseason and I expect a sort of 9-3 type season. This will repair his rep so he can get a nice college job (he may want the pros I just don't see it happening), we won't have to pay a buyout, and we can hire from a relative position of strength with the program on good footing.

Names I'd consider:

A list names:

- mcyntire (Colorado). Had a tough bowl game that took some luster off, but if he can win 10 games a second year there, he'd be a rock solid hire.
- Mullen (msst). I think when you get a once in a generation player like Dak Prescott and the best you can do is win 10 games and finish 2nd in your div, he may think he can do bigger things at ND.

B list:

-fleck (wmu/minn). See what he does at Minnesota, I'd be concerned 1 year at in a p5 school may not be enough but he's an intriguing guy.

-Greg schiano: intrigued by bringing a d guy in and letting the OC truly call plays, but I'm also conflicted because I think Elko will be a big part of our 2017 turnaround and I'd like the next guy to keep him. Schiano also has some hair on his history too that might need to be vetted.

-pat fitz (NW): nobody does more with less, great character guy, knows how to recruit to a system and academics. I don't prescribe to the "he hates nd crowd" and I've actually heard he'd listen if nd called at least.

See what happens.
