So now that ND is on the cusp of potentially winning a national championship he's trying to take credit for recruiting the team? This after he essentially publicly stated he couldn't win a championship at ND. He should just keep his mouth shut, It's year 3, he didn't develop those guys and a bunch of youngsters are starting for ND on both sides of the ball, guys he didn't recruit.

"A lot of the guys there that are on both sides of the ball, I recruited. Obviously I want to see those guys win it all, and I think they're in a great position. Totally excited for those guys."

Brian Kelly hired Marcus Freeman to be his DC, and Mike Denbrock worked for Brian Kelly for many years.

I would put these comments (he made some other nice statements too) on the good side of the balance. Still overall more stuff on the bad side for me, but its gone from "moderately negative" to "slightly negative" overall on my scale. Keep it up coach--you are only, one "I was mistaken" from even-Steven!

The guy couldn't even give Marcus Freeman any credit, instead he made it about himself.

This especially BS "Obviously I want to see those guys win it all, and I think they're in a great position. Totally excited for those guys."

He didn't feel that way about them when he barely gave them a few minutes of his time as he was leaving campus.

That's the biz-----you know that. Give it a rest.

I agree and I thought that the reasons he gave for leaving Notre Dame were disingenuous
Yea, that’s what I was referring to in his changing the narrative. If he had said at the time that he loved Notre dame, but after 12 years he needs a different challenge, many of us would feel differently. But instead he couched it in terms of wanting to compete for national championships, and basically said that ND doesn’t have the facilities and support and athletes to compete at that level. He makes it harder and harder to think fondly of him and credit his successful resurrection of the program.

I live in Ohio and root for UC and OSU, never been a big fan of ND, but it is what it is, but i think we all can agree BK is the biggest egotistical A$$HOLE in CFB!

Looking back at UC in 2021 when Kelly left ND, I think if UC was not in the CFP at the time Fickell would've ended up the Irish HC and Freeman would've been hired to come back to UC as HC. Easy answer right now on who the ND fans want as their HC, but back then who would've been your preference?

It’s interesting to point that out. I preferred Fickell as he had more experience.

Freeman easily

Talk about failing up. $100 million guaranteed for no championships, no major bowl wins, zero CFP wins.

I wanted Freeman, but will admit I was concerned about his age and lack of experience. Hiring him allowed the coaching staff and recruiting class to stay intact for the most part. The program was a legit top 10 program when Kelly left and didn’t need a complete overhaul. And Freeman was already proving himself as a recruiter/coach and as we see Freeman is far more beloved by his players than Kelly was. I do think HFC experience is an overrated criteria for finding the right man for the job. There are many examples of guys having success at a G5 or small P4 program only to fail when they advance to a blue blood program. I think you either got that "it" factor or you don't. And Freeman has it.

I hated it when ND hired Freeman because i knew Fickell had one foot out the door after all the talent from the 2021 team graduated. I think every UC fan saw Marcus as the heir apparent to the UC job after Luke left. Freeman is a great person and coach, i always liked him as a player at OSU and at UC as a coach. Hope you guys keep him in South Bend and away from the NFL!

I think anybody who tells you that back in 2021 they really wanted Marcus Freeman to be the head coach of Notre Dame after only one season as defensive coordinator is exaggerating or guilty of revisionist history at best. I don't think there was a lot of gnashing of teeth over Kelly's departure; most of us knew he had hit his ceiling, but there was plenty of angst over who the next coach should be. I'm sure glad he's our coach now, but I was pretty damned nervous about our prospects when they hired him.

Great post that summarizes it.

We sure did get lucky with a serious roll of the dice.

Go back and look. I wanted him to be the head coach and fought with a lot on the board that didn't want him or were so worried about the 1st year head coach nonsense.

Very good DC, very good recruiter, players loved him, charismatic personality....I thought it was pretty obvious

I remember in 2012, before ND was going to play Alabama in the BCSCG, Brian Kelly mentioned Charlie Weis wrote him a congratulatory note, There is way too much animosity and schadenfraude. Other than rooting for someone to lose to secure a spot in the CFP. What's gained by rooting for others to fail?

If in fact Brian Kelly, is legit pulling for the DC he hired on at ND M Freeman, one of his old coaching buddies, M Denbrock, and for some of the guys that were recruited to ND under his tenure (X Watts, T Baker, R Mills, J Thomas, D Colzie, R Spindler, M Evans, P Coogan, T Buchner, G Rubio, J Kiser, and H Cross III) to win a National Championship, something he failed to do, That is pretty mature and cool in my book

I felt the same way, I had serious reservations about the depth of his experience, but so far he’s proven to be a very good coach.

Good executives tend to hire very good direct reports

He isn’t wrong. Kelly spinning better than KJP.

He has been gone 3 years…so his connection is that he “recruited” those guys? He didn’t hang long enough to develop them or coach them so just give it up
Even the recruitment referenced is a farce. I don’t recall the specifics re each of these “recruits”, but Freeman (not Kelly) was absolutely instrumental in recruiting key guys on both sides of the ball. I think the fact the players lobbied for Freeman and fear over losing these “recruits” if he didn’t get the HC position were major factors in his selection. Kelly missed an opportunity to simply say he loved his twelve years at ND and of course he’s rooting for them to win.

Unfortunately it once again, exposes the essence (poor) of Kelly. He should have said “I’m so happy for the team and ND. I spent 12 years there and it will always have a piece of me…”

Except he can’t, he had to say “I recruited those guys….”….to try to take credit…when he had zero to do with the portal transfers, zero to do with the young guns on defense, or the young OL, or even the RBs….

And then like Brandon, he tries to tell us he said something different than what he did…and very few are forgetting his antics at LSU from fake accents to dancing with recruits, to exchanging juiced up high fives…

It really does cement why he hasn’t had as much success as MF….he faked it
