Had forgotten about Brady bringing the team back with 2 min to play and the Laws sack which made it 3rd and 19 with 1:44 to go. I really thought Weiss had brought us back , so much optimism. And the stadium had an electricity I don’t think we’ve seen since. Can’t believe it was only 18 years ago seemed like a different era of football— uniforms were simple, no Jumbotron or piped in music, 2 banged up qb’s gutting it out. Sifted through the first 55 min and still kind of hard to believe we lost that one

I was at that game and disappointed with the outcome on so many levels.

USC was lucky to have won that game

I always wondered why the visiting team got to decide on whether replay could be used.

Pretty crazy ending— the fumble more than the push. But I think it was the right call on the fumble

And lucky you for being in attendance. Crowd noise was awesome and I think last GREAT game played at nd stadium.

I was there. I’ve never experienced such a shift from high to low in such a short time. Clock went to zero after the fumble which unfortunately went out of bounds. After we all celebrated we then had to live through the agony of the last play. USC did multiple dumb things and still won. The most heinous part of the loss was Weis going to the USC locker room after the game … talk about no self awareness.

The football gods were watching and exacted their repayment in the rose bowl vs Texas where USC went for a 4th down conversion with the lead late in the game with Reggie bush standing on the sidelines and watched Lendale White get stopped then let Vince Young beat them.

Oh don't remind me of that game. I don't think I've ever been so disappointed with a regular season game loss than that one. What gets me is that 4th and 9. I forget the corner's name (Ambrose Wooden?) But his hand was right there for the PBU and it didn't happen.

yup 2 awesome games that year. would love to see that crowd excitement again on a regular basis

You’re so right about the 4th and 9 play. Wind it back and it was literally inches at most almost impossible to place it where he did. Wooden protection was actually good and if he hadn’t made the tackle at the 10 Quinn would have had another crack

Let's not forget Zbikowski biting on the play action fake which caused him to be late on the help over the top.

Try coming to some games

Michigan ‘18
USC and VT ‘19
USC ‘21
Clemson ‘22

We’re loud
1st ND QB I have vivid memory of was Izo, Lamonica and Hornung but not sure where he was in that line

I remember QB Baker of Oregon winning the HT

Garbage. I went back and watched the 4th and 9 play again, for around the 30th time since that day. There was no play action fake on fourth down by Matt Leinart. None.

To point to Tommy Z for blame on that pass by Matt Leinart to Dwayne Jarrett is laughable. Zbikowski should receive zero blame. And the CB Ambrose Wooden played the 6-5 Jarrett well, simply a perfectly placed pass by Leinart.

Zibikowski punt return was one of the best I’ve seen, sheer will to get to the end zone.

I counted about 9 ****ups which would have put the game away. SC could always come back down one score but not two. #8 includes the safeties on 4th and 19. If the tackle is made , they reset the chains and SC is still in trouble. Instead Jarret lumbered for another quarter of the field.

P.S. It was fourth and 9. At least get your facts straight.

I counted 32 players from that USC roster that got drafted in 2005-2008. 9 in the first round, 7 in the second round including Jarrett. USC made more plays (barely) than our undermanned but over performing Irish. Your take that ND blew that game is one I’ve never heard.

I have never heard "...9 fu.. ups..." as well. I would love to see the "9" screw ups Notre Dame made that day against USC itemized and listed.

And USC WR Dwayne Jarrett("...lumbered...") was drafted in the second round of the 2007 NFL Draft.

I think the 7 inch high grass helped ND stay close. Lol. Just kidding. However , it truly was a game of inches. The 4th and 9 pass was barely missed from being tipped away. Instead it was caught and you all know the rest.

That USC game sucked and we lost. Texas would have beaten our ass. If you want to watch the last meaningful competitive season ND was in you have to go aback to 1988. 2012 was special and sweet to me since I was living at ND then, but we really didn’t play anyone good until Bama.

That said, I am excited per usual, but a little more. Think with good coaching, 2023 could be 2012 or better level. I have not had that feeling since 2012.

The myth about the grass being high and slowing down the players is just that, a MYTH.

uh, you mention 5 games in 5 years. i said “ on a regular basis”. Try again
Lol. So you expect every game will have the same loudness as USC-ND in 2005? About as astute as your arguments for Bama to be in the playoffs last year.

I listed the bigger games, where the crowd was plenty loud, try to keep up. But then again, you need to attend a game to actually see it

What the trolls miss as usual is the context of 2005

First year after the disaster that was Willinghams last year.

the Irish nation was not very confident about much at that time.

The 2005 USC team was being called one of the greatest of all time
The expectation was that they would come into South Bend and destroy ND

But Weis had appeared to be bringing us back and there was a true fervor coming into that game by the Irish Nation

Coming so close to beating the so called unbeatable (and everyone seeing the Bush Push and knowing that is what USC had to pull to win) truly made a difference to ND Nation.
