NCAA rules allow one such trip per four years, and the Irish had one in 2013. They were scheduled to be in Italy and Croatia this summer for numerous games from July 31-August 9. and thus allowed 10 extra practice days.

However, I learned this weekend that the trip has been cancelled, with plans to go in 2018 instead The reason for the change: Not enough healthy bodies.

• Freshman forward Erin Boley and sophomore point guard are both transferring.
• Junior forward Brianna Turner had April 12 ACL surgery and might not be available to play this season.
• Junior forward Kathryn Westbeld had ankle surgery this month and will be sidelined four months.
• Junior guard Mychal Johnson had shoulder surgery, and likewise needs recovery time.

That left six healthy bodies for this summer: fifth-year senior Kristina Nelson, Stanford graduate transfer and point guard Lili Thompson, sophomore guards Marina Mabrey and Arike Ogunbowale and incoming freshman forwards Mikayla Vaughn and Danielle Patterson.

Can't travel and compete that light. Plus, next season ND already has four verbals, and is looking to get maybe two more, including 6-4 Jessica Shepard, who would be a junior transfer from Nebraska, where she averaged 18 points and nine rebounds per game.

Next year would seem more appropriate for travel.
