An interesting article about Jaylen Sneed was posted today on The Athletic by Pete Sampson. Sounds like his mother has been very big on academics all his life, and that was a big selling point for her about Notre Dame. Confirms the old adage that when you recruit a kid, you are also recruiting his mother.

I didn't know that in high school Sneed played quarterback, running back, receiver, defensive end, linebacker, cornerback and safety. Also did track in HS. His mother taught him how to throw the discus, of all things. He grew up in Hilton Head, SC, but didn't want to go to Clemson because it was too close to home. Ended up at ND even though his father is apparently a huge fan of Georgia. Reading the story, it is pretty clear he ended up at ND because of the effort and persistence of Marcus Freeman. He sounds like he could be a real difference maker on defense, though it might be tough for him to get on the field this year. He weighed 198 lbs. when he got to ND, though Balis now has him up to 210. Another JOK in the making? With Pryor and Moala gone, it is not inconceivable he could end up No. 2 on the depth chart at Rover, behind Jack Kiser.

I think Freeman is probably very popular with mothers. 😍

I am really excited about Jaylen Sneed and his athletic skills. But all I care about is his will to be a GREAT football player. I hope throwing the discus or reading many books does not take away from his play on the gridiron.
We need players that want to become NFL players. Not lawyers or Doctors.
We dont need Ren·ais·sance men we need hardnosed football players !!
Sorry for being a A$$ but I have heard enough about Notre Dame players being well educated and better than the neanderthalls in the SEC.
We need neanderthalls !! And so does Matt Ballis !!
Think 1988 !! And the rumble in the tunnell against Miami !! Those players were mean badA$$'s !!!
Matt Ballis will make Jaylen eat Lightning and crap Thunder !! Shout out to Burgess Meredith !!

If healthy he will get on the field vs osu, at minimum some special teams

Really? Is that weird? To admit that he's a good looking guy? He likely makes mom blush. That's not weird. It's a fact of life. A good looking, young, coach at the biggest brand CFB team in the land. My wife and all her friends think Matt LaFleur and Sean McVay are good looking. Is that weird? Either you're homophobic or you're thinking that means something more than simply being an attractive guy, which good or bad, buys you a lot of popularity with certain people.

Being a great football player and a smart guy are not mutually exclusive, Bodi. I think we can all agree that Kyle Hamilton is a great football player. He will likely go in the top 5 of the NFL draft if all the mock drafts are to be believed. But did you know that Kyle Hamilton is also really smart? He is literally a member of Mensa, meaning he has a genius level IQ. That is a pretty rare combination, one I don't recall seeing with another ND player. I remember Jerry Tillery was a pretty good player with a high IQ, and I am sure there have been others. Drue Tranquill majored in mechanical engineering--no cream puff majors for him!--and graduated with a 3.73 GPA.

As to your point about getting players who want to become NFL players, in The Athletic article I referenced there was an interesting quote from Jaylen Sneed's HS coach, B.J. Payne, that gives some insight about Marcus Freeman's recruiting philosophy:

“Marcus goes with the philosophy of bucking the trend where Notre Dame checks if you’re a Notre Dame guy and then hopes you’re a dude,” Payne said. “No, it’s, ‘He’s a dude, now let’s hope he’s a Notre Dame guy.’”

Let's hope Marcus can bring us a lot of "dudes".

How it should be. Anyone that isn't a criminal dead beat can be a Notre Dame guy if they try. The entrance requirements for football players is astoundingly low compared with the normal student body.

Great post as always GreenKool;aid ! You make some GREAT points !
But I stand by my comments. We need some brain dead thugs also to go along with the Smart scholarly ones. Someone has to do the dirty work ! I remember telling a friend back in the late 80s that Nebraska needs some thugs if they ever want to beat those Florida teams. And boy did they get some thugs and boy did they dominate college football during the mid 90's!!

The ultimate good-looking coach, who probably owed his job to his handsome looks and appearance, rather than his resume or his talents alone, would be old boy from Texas Tech. I don't even know if he's that handsome or not, but does anyone think Kliff Kingsbury would have gotten an NFL HC job if he looked like Andy Reid, with his record at the time?

And unfortunately MF could top that. If anyone doesn't think that MF's good looks, and his handsome face, played no small role in him getting the ND job, they're either painfully stupid, or more likely so homophobic that their bigoted brains simply does not compute such factors. Of course it's not possible to actually be that stupid, the human brain doesn't work that way. If anything one of the things human beings have the keenest awareness of is where they fit in the sexual pecking order, and anyone trying to act like they have no sense at all of MF being a matinee idol is simply lying.

In any case, the fact that MF basically got the job on account of his good looks, notwithstanding his other good qualities, somehow feels like it doesn't bode well. When you can run a simple thought experiment and conclude that no way in a million years he ever would have gotten the ND job without it, it doesn't fill you with confidence. But KK is still an NFL coach, so maybe MF will also prove to be more than just a pretty face, as the saying goes....

Could you please tell us all where you got the Mensa information from ? Drue Tranquill started out as a Mechanical Engineering major but switched to a less demanding major . The only people I've heard that were Mensa from the football team were Tim Ruddy and Rob Martinovitch.

Okay, but Alan Page clearly showed you could be both. Being a bad ass on the football field and being highly successful after football are not exclusive.

There are other websites I have seen the same thing said about Kyle, which you can google. I think I heard the same statement made during a game, though my memory could be off on that.

As for Tranquill, I think you are wrong about that. Here is a Scholastic article on him, where it says he graduated with a 3.73 GPA and an ME degree:

Why do you believe he changed his major?

Are you serious, Kyle Hamilton is an actual member of Mensa? I don't know how to feel about, because that's pretty dorky. Not having a high IQ, as he's clearly a very bright guy. But actually being a dues-paying member of Mensa.

Unless you're just saying he could join if he wanted to, that he would qualify. I can't imagine actually joining Mensa for real....

And Dru Tranquill is a badass. He doesn't give off the vibe of being a serious intellectual type, I guess, for lack of a better word for it, but he clearly is, and certainly was an academic A-A out of central casting. The perfect, true 'student athlete' with a super demanding STEM major.

I was always just impressed with what a particularly badass player he was, and his ability to repeatedly bounce back from serious knee injuries, seemingly without missing a beat. I remember hm more as an uber-competitive warrior than as a certifiable genius.
