It's official. Luatua will transfer

Hopefully ND can find someone quality along the d line or something to replace thespot with since there is still a few weeks left

Our recruiting numbers, and the offers we stil have out, show we were already expecting a normal amount of attrition. This is just part of that, not that his leaving opens up a specific extra recruiting spot.

I would bring back Houshell to be the blocking TE. He is eligible for a 6th season.

I'm not too surprised and actually glad. I didn't see great things from him, and I really like and hope to see a whole lot of PT for Alize Jones.
The comments on this board amaze me. Glad? Good grief people don't think you can make a large contribution unless you are catching passes. I'd bet there isn't another TE on the roster that has played more snaps in the last two years. There aren't many guys from his class that have logged as many snaps I'd bet too. Guy came in and played from day one as a tr fr. And even though he had some improving to do he was still our best blocking TE on the roster... By a lot.

Now I'm not saying he's a huge loss, but with no TE coming in this class it changes the complexion of the existing group and now we may have to bring chase back, who wasn't nearly as good as Tyler.

Can't we wish him the best in these cases? My guess is he felt he could do a little more than blocks and wanted to see, and perhaps the concussion issue had him worried and it seems nd handles these conservatively more so than elsewhere. Glad he's gone? Sheesh.

Go back and watch the highlights of our big runs this year and on many of them you will see Latua burying his man or pushing him ten yards downfield. Hate to see him go and not graduate from ND - Good luck.

Its a tough loss . I always thought he should have played DE . He played LB and TE in HS. A tough player. As far as throwing to the TE's . ND didn't do that much this year. I think Alize Jones becomes the TE they are expecting next year.

His trajectory is still up. It's an awful loss.

He has beef, is a big target and should have been used more in short yardage routes.

He saw that his pt was shrinking. Jones, Smythe and Weishar are an excellent top 3.

Good teammate and good representative of ND who played a key role on one of our best running teams in recent years. Wish him nothing but the best.

hard to see how its an "awful" loss. hate to see any player leave but from a team aspect i believe the impact of his departure will be minimal at best.

Really? The young man comes in as the # 38 ranked player in the country and then doesn't catch a pass despite loads of field action....

Lord knows what he'll say in CA to others.... about the "kelly experience"......

He does a ton of grunt work and receives zero reward. He leaves ND without a degree....

It's awful that he has left under these circumstances.

how so ? he CHOSE to leave without an nd degree. no one ran him off. you act like ken mcafee was defecting. so he was ranked 38th. that's no guarantee. what was mike mcnair rated ? that list goes on and on. maybe latua showed in practice that he would never be more than a good blocker ? i wasn't there. were you ? of course YOU would blame kelly. again, him leaving will have a minimal impact on the program.

Considering he already had a large impact (especially as a tr fr/so) I think the burden of proof is on you to show him leaving will have a minimal impact... Care to take a stab or is it commonplace to discard a kid once he leaves an minimize anything he's accomplished already?

I wished he stayed and I don't blame BK either for the record, but given the amount of time he's played as a young player and contributed to a run game that was lights out in 2015, I think you have to back up that opinion somehow with something.

i'm not minimizing anything. he was a one dimensional player who did fine when he played. he wasn' t a prominent part of the offense. HE HAS CHOSEN TO LEAVE. no one is wishing ill will on him. in my opinion the impact on the team as a whole will be minimal. i don't think scott booker or any other member of the staff is wearing out the carpet in the GUG fretting about it.

I guess I'm asking what your basing it on. If it's the fact that he's one dimensional, fine, but the point about not being prominent probably needs further discussion. By snap counts and games started the last two years he's played by far the most football of anyone returning in that position. I'm not sure how that isnt considered prominent? He may be one dimensional, but that doesn't mean he wasn't prominent.

I think we'll be fine overall but it will probably require taking a guy for a 6th year that wasn't nearly as good, developing other guys that haven't exhibited minimal/any proficiency in run blocking, and tweaking the offense to rely less on blocking TE sets. I'm not comfortable saying there won't be an impact though, based on those facts.

to be fair if smythe doesn't get injured latua likely doesn't play as much. you never want to lose a player but losing latua is hardly crippling. there is depth there. nd will not miss a beat.

How about he compete and earn the starting job? Get better. He was the best blocking tight end on the roster but hardly unreplaceable.

Yeah, and Kizer and Prosise weren't "prominent parts" of the offense until forced into action. Neither was Zaire for that matter... The handling of Zaire is among the most puzzling and disturbing head coaching gaffes of kelly's tenure. As Golson became a "turnover machine" an incredible talent wasted away on the bench only to see "real" action when down 35-0 in the second 1/4 of the season's final game.... He then wins a Bowl MVP in his first start.

So, the implying/suggestion that kelly does a good job with personnel and is on top of things is ridiculous when he has butchered the most high profile position on the field for a full season.

Luatua was one dimensional only because kelly's an idiot. Do you think dumping some screens to him may have helped our red zone/other performance? That "one dimensional" trait sure helped out opposing defenses.

Lord knows what other talent is buried....

Luatua made a heart wrenching choice to leave ND. Your suggestion that losing a solid lead blocker and sometime starter will be minimal is ridiculous. Plus, he was very well liked by his team mates....that apparently means nothing to you.

As for this staff fretting, their largest bowl win in 6 years is the Music City Bowl.

Until that changes they suck wind. As stated elsewhere. kelly is zeroing in on becoming the "losingest" coach in ND history.... With 23 losses only Davie, Faust, Weis and Holtz stand in his way. PS He is 7 losses from Holtz and 8 from setting the record.... Holtz also had 100 wins. kelly has 55 now. He stinks.

"ND will not miss a beat".... Heading into last season our total offensive reception production from the TE position was 1 catch. Last year the position generated 20 receptions, but some of them were to Jones who was playing a receiver position.... So, you are probably correct as kelly has statistically driven that position into the ground....

Lastly, are you for real with your inability to spell Luatua's name correctly?

"latua" Maybe you should learn the player's names before commenting on them.

You are superb at proving your ignorance....

ever think latua just didn't show the requisite receiving skills needed for the position. the fact that he wasn't targeted in games leads to the logical conclusion that he didn't show it in practice. one dimensional is okay. if other tight ends were targets why wouldn't latua have been if he showed he could in fact catch the ball. latua is great but they don't throw him the ball, redfield is great but the system is too complicated, yada, yada yada. i believe you said cam mcdaniel would make an nfl roster too. going to harbaughs signing day party Judas ?

my bad on the spelling. maybe you should understand football before commenting on it. you're showing your ignorance about the game every time you post.

You would blame Kelly for your hemorrhoids. He is probably to blame for your low IQ.
"It's an awful loss". Don't think so
The kid should stay and finish what he started.
i don't blame any kid for doing what he believes is in his best interests. that said in the big picture it's merely a very minor adjustment to the depth chart.

No, I said McDaniel was a camp invite to the Cowboys. I also noted that he had some solid speed numbers.

I spent time with Cam, his wife, new baby...when he was training in Southern Cal.

"my bad on the spelling."
"ever think latua"

You're just plain stupid.

It's Luatua not latua. I've seen the kid play and he can catch. kelly's just stupid.

He's not as stupid as you, but indeed stupid.

PS As for your "Judas" remark, I'd rather be in Holtz' company than your's. Also, that wasn't me taking an Eagles interview while the team was in a time of need.... Team gets crushed...coach flies the coop... Yeah, he's a peach... Dare I say traitor? Judas? Bingo on that....

I bet he sets record for the most losses by an ND coach within 2 years.... He stinks.

sad, bitter, low character of a man. grade school name calling is your strength. traitor because of a job interview ? you really are sad. go fellate harbaugh some more.

You're just dumb.

kelly's 2 plus decades coaching D2 only proves that he stunk at coaching for a long time...

"low character of a man. grade school name calling is your strength"

Harbaugh is building a war machine. kelly's building a fade route pea shooter.

I accurately and statistically account Harbaugh's record versus our dumb ass HC.

You can't deal with it....

can't take an opinion of someone on a football related message board who has minimal if any true football knowledge seriously. keep trying though. the library is your friend. coaching at a lower level indicates you're not a good coach ? my you're a fool. larry kehres would coach circles around kelly and harbaugh.

20 + years in the pee wees impresses you. You are certainly entitled to that opinion.

However, I'm betting you never saw one gvsu game coached by kelly.

PS ESPN reported earlier that Harbaugh just had the greatest single season leap in ESPN 300 history from #40 to #5.

Would you care to comment on his DT DE haul? Lastly, I'll take Lou Holtz' opinion over your's every day....

Again, you are just dumb.

Keep pumping sunshine though and writing stupid stuff.... It suits you.

I d be glad to tutor you on the game of football. You would benefit greatly and it most certainly be your privilege.
