I'm not sure where most stand on this issue but I would love to have him back, if for nothing depth and experience. I spend too much time re-watching games to the point my wife thinks I'm nuts, but one of the most glaring issues are the stupid and correctable mistakes that ND makes. The dropped snaps from the holder, the fumbles not only by Golson but Brown and McDaniels, going for 2 points at the wrong time. These are the types of, shoot yourself in the foot type mistakes, that good, well coached teams don't make.
Even in the ASU game we had a couple of picks because BK didn't make the adjustment to stop throwing the quick slant when their D ends were not rushing hard and got their hands up to deflect passes. We adjusted in the second half by attacking the middle of the field instead of going to the quick slant against the blitz. To me at least 2 of those picks that Golson threw in that game were on coaching,
I'm no longer interested in giving BK a pass for these types of things. I'm hopeful that we cut down on those type of things because those plays change seasons from 10-3 to 8-5. Northwestern and ASU should have been wins. FSU could have been a win but Stanford could have been loss so we'll call that even.
This will be the most interesting season of the BK era in my opinion. This team will have a lot of talent on it. There are plenty of guys on this team that will ultimately play in the NFL. We have a manageable schedule as well. This could be a special season, but it would require Malik Zarie to really elevate as a passer because if people think teams are just going to let him run the ball when they know that's what he wants to do, they are crazy. Balance on offense is key.
On defense its simple to me, if the kids Trumbetti, Morgan, take the next step and the safeties play to their star level the defense will be outstanding. Plenty of fresh bodies on the D Line for rotating.
I have been a hardcore supporter of BK and I know he has recruited an excellent roster. With that said if any other great coach had this roster and this schedule expectations would be sky high, but I actually think BK's history of having those games where the team comes out flat have tempered expectations within the fan base and many others nationwide in my opinion. Here's to a great season for ND. I can't wait to see this team play.
