1) Expand to 16 teams, no byes.

2) Eliminate conference championship games. On what is now championship weekend (weekend following Thanksgiving), each conference may hold one regular season game.

3) Guaranteed slots for the top 4 teams each in the SEC and Big Ten, top 2 teams each in the ACC and Big 12 (as determined by conference standings, not by CFP rankings), and the highest ranked G5 team by CFP ranking, The other three slots will go to the highest remaining ranked teams (by CFP rankings) not from the SEC or Big 10.

4) The 16 playoff teams will be bracketed into four brackets. All four SEC teams will be in one bracket. All four Big 10 teams will be in one bracket. All ACC teams (at least two) will be in one bracket, and all Big 12 teams (at least 2) will be in one bracket. G5 and independent teams will be placed into the ACC and Big 12 brackets with the easternmost (by longitude) teams placed in the ACC bracket and the rest in the Big 12 bracket.

5) Each bracket will be seeded 1-4 by CFP ranking. The first round will be the weekend that is two weeks following Thanksgiving, with higher ranked teams hosting the games (2 on Friday evening, 6 on Saturday).

6) The quarterfinals will be the weekend following the first round (1 on Friday evening, 3 on Saturday). The SEC bracket quarterfinal will be held as the Peach Bowl. The Big Ten bracket quarterfinal will be held as the yet-to-be named new bowl game in Indianapolis. The ACC bracket quarterfinal will be held as the Orange Bowl. The Big 12 bracket quarterfinal will be held as the Cotton Bowl.

7) The semifinals will be on January 1 (January 2 if the 1st is a Sunday) as the Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl.

8) The championship will be on the Monday in January that falls between the 10th and 16th.

Going by the pre-championship CFP rankings from this year, this would have been the bracket:

SEC: 4 Alabama at 1 Texas, 3 Tennessee at 2 Georgia
Big 10: 4 Indiana at 1 Oregon, 3 Penn State at 2 Ohio State
ACC: 4 Clemson at 1 Notre Dame, 3 Miami at 2 SMU
Big 12: 4 BYU at 1 Boise State, 3 Iowa State at 2 Arizona State
