I am an optimist and love ND football. I just can't think of any reason to keep Kelly. I believe he has suffered burnout and he is not going to turn the ship around. We are now in the DEAD ZONE. I can't think of anything about ND football now that doesn't start with a brand new coach. Pennick and his gang of grey sweatered old bachi ball players can call me a traitor and weak all they want for turning on Kelly. Nothing against Bachi ball but I just love Notre Dame football too much to want to accept mediocrity and my eventual demise without my Irish eyes seeing one more ND championship.

Bodi.. Relax it's this simple he has this season to survive if he doesn't he's out. I do think ND will be a lot better this upcoming season even if Kizer does go pro. Not that we will be better without him but we played so many freshman and they got valuable experience. Also we have some skill players back don't forget Alize Jones he would've been a huge difference maker our TE's were non existent all year.

Defense is non existent and nothing changes unless it's fixed!

Here's the $64 question: In the event of a very slow start...say 1-3 or 2-5 happens...Is Kelly canned or is it a foregone conclusion that he's here the entire season regardless?

Bodi, exactly on point. Assuming Kelly does return, I think he will be obsessed with rehabilitating his reputation. The first clue we'll get as to whether he is both reinvigorated and humbled by this past season, will be his decision on how to fill the DC position. If he simply juggles existing staff and appoints someone like Elston, then we know we have the same old arrogant stubborn HC, and next season will likely be his last. If his decision is to hire from outside and not from his coaching tree and get someone like Wilcox or Strong, then we can expect wholesale changes in the defensive position coaches and likely changes at ST and S&C as well, along with some tinkering with offensive scheme. That would signal to me a level of commitment and willingness to make changes beyond his ego deiven comfort zone, and give me reason for a degree of optimism and to be anxious for next season to get underway. Rather than hope for the later, my preference is for Kelly to be fired asap and a new coach and staff hired to bring a new sense of energy and commitment and style of play to ND; but absent this, a reinvigorated Kelly with a new DC from outside and multiple changes is assistant coaches is the next best thing.

i want Notre Dame to win also, i hope next season we do well beyond expectations. i also believe as stated before that Kelly appears to be lazy and complacent. There are times he has great game plans and coaches well for example the music city bowl. that was a great game plan. Amazing how power football works. That said there are times and most of the time its bad game plans and bad game day decisions . So its possible that Kelly could coach a stellar year but usually lazy complacent coaches follow the path of least resistance.

I sometimes wonder how the message board would have reacted to Rockne's 5-4 record in 1928? People in the press were speculating that college football had caught up with the famed ND Shift and Rockne's best years were behind him? Wrong! Leahy's 1950 team did no better than 4-4-1 and lose 8 games over the last three seasons. Had Leahy's physical problems finished off the brilliant coach of Notre Dame? Wrong! I'll never forget the end of the USC game in 1972 and the embarrassing lose to Nebraska in the 1973 Orange Bowl. I was really glad that I didn't have a venting platform that night. Wrong! I might add that by the end of the 1988 beating by Texas A&M in the Cotton Bowl I was ready to give Coach Holtz the bum's rush too. Wrong!!! Given ND's history I can sorta see Swarbrick's giving Kelly a chance to turn things around but 31 loses in 7 years? It' seems time to end the torture Jack! ?

Rockne had one bad year in 11, Leahy had one bad year in 11, Ara really never had a bad year in his 11 at ND ... bad was 3 losses and the beating in the Orange Bowl, Holtz had 2 bad years in 11. With all of these coaches, you never felt going into a game that we'd loose, even in their "down" years. Unlike with Kelly, you never know how we'll do.

The Kelly coaching tree has done zilch

If we are 1-3 that's still a lot of football left. If we are 2-5, I wouldn't let him finish the year, cut the cord.

Seriously, you should just stop. Including kelly in the same sentence as Rockne is beyond insulting. Comparing this situation to Rockne is beyond stupid and the height of lunacy.
Here are Rockne's W L T records before that season.

3 1 2
9 0
9 0
10 1
8 1
9 1
10 0
7 2
9 1
7 1 1
5 4

So, in 10 years Rockne lost as many games as kelly this year. He also won 2 NCs and had 3 undefeated seasons...

81 8 3

then

5-4

Well done!!! Excellent comparison!!

It is interesting to me to read about the struggles at Tennessee too. The complaints against Butch Jones very closely mirror those against BK. Intriguing since their careers have been very similar.

It looks like he will survive this year, but he's on a very short leash right now. And his "champions in the game of life" comment a week or so ago sent the Vol fan base into a tizzy, so he didn't help himself at all there. Tennessee and Georgia fans are pretty similar right now, totally frustrated that the SEC East has been so mediocre for the past four years, yet neither one has managed to win the division even once. While interloping newbie Mizzou won it twice.

You guys complaining now? Wait till next year after 4 games and we have lost 2 of them. First Kelly'll lose the fan base and soon after the team. Then by the end of October we will all be trying to find another HC for the Kelly supporters all over again. Another year of yelling and screaming. Can't wait. More of the same, where's Jack?

lol ... liked for learning what bocci ball is .. and the hilarious picture depicting the last demographic/generation of people that got to see a dominant ND football program.

You sound like a Jill Stein Supporter.

I can't wait until Trumps inauguration day. He is going to have you and Kelly deported to a.deserted tropical island where you and the Skipper Kelly can discuss the spread offense while collecting coconuts.

Actually he is going to demand that you and the French military not withdraw when the going gets tough.

Last week you wanted to keep Kelly.
This week you want him gone.
Next week you'll want him to stay.
Talk about wishy-washy.

Unfortunately like a bad smell he will linger on!
