I miss & loved Lou Smogyi’s articles. I agree with Lou S. That year 3 will be the ceiling. I’d give MF 4/5 years.
If he does get let go. Two things stand out. Year 2 & having 10 players on the field vs Ohio St. How does that happen.
Last night end of first half & Hartman gets sacked. It’s 3rd & 11/12. Under a minute. Deep in the Irish territory. He calls TO. Why? Why ? Why? He then follows up with a throw that falls incomplete & stops the clock. Louisville licking their chops has a short field & a fg try. Why?
The two above really show a coach’s inexperience. Unfortunately I think MF is in over his head.
They were bad decisions, no question. But I saw them as PANIC REACTIONS as well, building up to the 4th and 11 call. I believe there was also ANOTHER fourth and long later that also FIZZLED.
As the game got further out of hand what I saw was DESPERATION MOUNTING. Freeman was back looking how he'd looked in the first bowl game and in the Marshall and Stanford games.
Out of his depth, I agree.
I'm beginning to wonder if Rees, despite working with somewhat inept QB's, held this team TOGETHER last year by MANUFACTURING OFFENSE in the way Kelly claimed he, Brian Kelly, could always do. How ironic would that be, but then Rees may have learned a thing or two from Kelly.
But my concern now is, if a) my theory has legs and b) Parker is just as overmatched as Freeman, other teams may be able to "GET ND's NUMBER" and turn projected comfortable ND wins into close games or even upsets.
There's sometimes a VERY THIN LINE between a team that can WIN ANY GAME and one that can LOSE ANY GAME. And the SHIFT can occur quite suddenly.
And I say this REGARDLESS of what happens against USC. If a team is FLAWED, the flaws may not always show up when you expect them to, but, over time, you WILL see them.
