How many of the coaches ranked above BK would you want at ND?

Saban of course, although I dont think you can duplicate the Alabama machine anywhere else in the country.
Meyer. I would still take him, but I think the time has passed.
Fisher and Dabo - I do not think he would be a good fit at ND similar to Rodriguez at Michigan. They will always coach in the south.
Harbaugh - Lol what the hell is he doing on the list. He has 3 college stops none longer then 4 years and hasnt finished first in his conference since leaving San Deigo.

My wish list would start and end with Chris Peterson.

Petersen isn't leaving Seattle!!! I don't get why ND fans keep bringing him up? He already turned down USC.

Besides not liking this writer's methodology, the obvious coaches I would take over Kelly are:

Saban, Harbaugh, and Meyer.

Everyone else just kind of blends in after that.

The 3 above coaches instantly change a program into a title contender and recruiting powerhouse.

Kyle Whittingham and Chris Peterson are the only ones I'd take in a heartbeat. I doubt that either will ever be available for us but that wasn't the question posed.

Not sure about Whittingham; he brought Dennis Erickson back into college coaching.

Gundy, Snyder, Fitz and Ferntz would be latteral moves at best. Another mans trash isn't always another's treasure.

Dabo - if he goes anywhere it will be Bama where he played

Ferentz - lol he is overrated IMO and hasn't done much lately with the schedule he has

Saban - lol he'll retire at Bama

Peterson - isn't going anywhere other than the west coast

Harbaugh - will go pro

Shaw - I could see him at Michigan next

Wittingham - no clue how that would work

Meyer - is ND still his dream job? No clue

Still waiting on a possible replacement that makes sense to the Kelly haters

Guys, it is what it is... Time to back BK and ND. I hope we all want BK to coach forever because he has righted the ship. If not, events will take care of themselves.

I agree and I'm not calling for a firing at this point. I just saw the list put out by CBS and was curious about how everyone felt about it.

I think they have BK in about the right spot, but that doesn't mean I'd prefer to have 22 other guys in the seat at ND.

Harbaugh has done nothing. His rep is so much better than his reality.
1. He's never won't his conference PAC or big 10.
2. He had two losing records and two winning records at Stanford. Shaw has a better record over multiple classes.
3. He is a journeyman. No more than 4 years anywhere. He has no history of being able to deliver year over year. He gives an initial pop in recruiting...develops them then bolts. He is not a proven long term solution and should not be in the same conversation as dabo, saban, Meyer, Fisher.

Last year Kelly was # 12. See what a bad year will do ? I ve always considered him top 15. My opinion hasn't t changed.

Has done nothing except turn around all four teams he has coached. Did nothing in the NFL other than out coaching Saban. He won't be leaving in the foreseeable future.

Sort of disagree. Harbaugh's history dictates he doesn't stay around long enough to make a difference. However - he's now at his alma mater. His self-proclaimed "dream job". I don't see him leaving UM any time soon. He hasn't won a conference yet, but I'd bet my mortgage several will come in the near future.

And the impact he's had in his short stint there so far is very telling. He definitely infused much needed toughness into that team. And his recruiting - even the haters have to admit, is outstanding. For all his antics and seemingly sophomoric behavior - he connects with his players and they love him.

That being said, I don't think he would be a good fit at ND, but I'd take him in a heartbeat. Half a heartbeat to be exact.

Funny after he leaves most of those players are said to have harbaugh fatigue. Until proven otherwise he is a Larry Brown minus the titles.

That's an assumption based on nothing except he's coaching at a school he went to.
As far as turning around every team he went to...if Kelly had left after 2012 would you say he turned Notre Dame around? That was year 3. About as long as Harbough stays at a job.

Seems to me that Lou Holtz bounced around quite a bit (NC St, Jets, Arkansas, Minnesota) before landing at ND and settling in.

Holtz was a National championship winning coach who's teams beat top ten teams consistently !! Harbaugh has not won anything ! He is Urban Meyers whipping boy !!

The point made by Mirer is that Harbaugh jumped around a lot before coming to Michigan. Holtz jumped around a lot before coming to ND.

Attempt to follow the thread.

What's up with everyone saying Harbaugh isn't an elite coach? Do we remember when BVG's defense shut out Michigan a year before Harbaugh came to Michigan?

I wouldn't want any of them! This program is not a that point in their maturity cycle. It's reputation has been badly tarnished. The HC is often ridiculed or questioned on the national sport medias. This program is a tough sell right now. Not just to prospects but to the followers (though certainly not on this site). By the end of the cycle ND's recruiting class will be again out of the top 10. Get use to more defections, unless the enthusiasm of the assistants can keep them. Right now - when and if a change is finally made, you will need to go young, bold and someone with enormous enthusiasm for his job and team. The whole culture of the program, team and faithful needs to be reconstructed. There was one HC available, but Swarbrick went all in. Now both will go. (Minnesota is now ranked #8 in Rivals recruiting. What odds on their class being ranked higher than ND by next February?)

Asking players how they feel about a coach AFTER he leaves??? Good luck getting honest opinions. More like a solid dose of sour grapes.

The guy adds instant enthusiasm and toughness to any team. Does a tough, hard-nosed coach wear on the players? I bet it does. But they become better football players because of it. His smarmy personality and shenanigans can also wear on alumni, administrators and others too. Nobody can see the future. We shall see how his career in Ann Arbor turns out, but my money would be on him doing great things.

Oh yea buddy. New as soon as I read young and enthusiasm Fleck would be the topic. He has is ND's future coach. Watch him win about 18 or 19 games in 2 years at minny then come to ND!

Minny won't finish it's class as high as 8.
ND will likely be in somewhere @ 10-15.

(the best recruiting time of the yearfor ND is June; the predictions are always bordering on 'pie in the sky'. Loy has such a list out today! he knows how to generate interest and hype to sell subscriptions. Last year, this time, remember the OL CB's he made; total whiff! But it got everyone pumped.)

Yeah buddy.... MN will have a higher ranked class than ND. Even if some of the players ND gets might be better than listed for MN. For the last 7 years all this crap, of who is interested, who might visit, how they saw the program.. all BS. Each and every year. The ND program is in trouble and until there is a material difference shown on the field, recruits will back away. That's a fact - get over it and deal with it. Go back to the Kool-Aide

I just don't see Saban or Meyer having the same type of success at ND that they have at their current schools. At least not without a significant change in football attitude by the Admin. Likely the same with some of the other guys too.

Harbaugh is a good coach but he is also a total jerk. I would not want him at ND.

Funny coincidence that his lifetime average college coaching record works out to basically... 8-5.

Kelly haters take note lol.

No chance. ND is one season removed from a 10 win season. The sky is not falling.

USC chose Helton over BK.
And, it might be said, BK would have chosen USC over ND; if they'd have had him.

every coach on the list with the possible exception of Paul Johnson is preferable to and better than Brian Kelly.
