how about Chris Peterson? next HC

Irishblessing, Petersen was the guy I thought of when Kelly hired Sanford. I thought at the time that Sanford would gain great experience at ND, go on to be a successful head coach at a place like Boise State, and become a hot prospect for a major program HC hire, much like Petersen. Would jump at the opportunity to bring Petersen to ND when Kelly leaves, but also hope that Sanford leaves (with bridges built to ND) after this season for a HC opportunity that will prepare him for consideration in a few years as well.

If you are the AD at ND - you need to be developing relationships / friendships w/ coaches who would be great at ND. J.S. I hope does not have his head in the sand and better be doing his job in terms of having a viable list of potential next coaches for when his man retires, moves on or is fired at some point.

I think you can be comfortable that Jack has a constantly evolving short list of replacements for every head coaching position at ND, including football.

Petersen seems to be in his dream job already. He turned USC and several other big jobs down, and waited for UW to open up instead. Apparently he really likes the Pacific NW, and I also get the feeling he doesn't want the pressure of a USC/ND type of job, either.

I am an ND grad and have attended in excess of 200 ND home games home and many away games. I graduated from ND before you became a "crazy fan." So your alleged credentials don't impress me.
ND is, first and foremost, an academic institution. We do not "win at all costs" and I hope ND never adopts the win at all costs philosophy.
ND does not take transfer or JUCO students on more than an occasional basis. There is a reason for that---the young men are supposed to be students. I could care less that you are dissatisfied with that.

Exactly. The OP has no clue.

I would rather drop to the Ivy League level than adopt a "Win at all costs" approach. Do not lose the soul of the University for football, or any sport. Don't lose the soul to sell out for research compared to teaching as well. Many faculty have won national and state teaching awards in the past few years. The University is more important than the sports teams.

Couldn't have said it any better myself. Anyone who advocates a winning at all costs mentality at ND should go root for a program like Alabama, Ohio State, southern cal, Florida State, etc... Folks who advocate such things simply don't get it---and never will.

Go root for Nebraska. Geez, you are beyond tiresome.
Then make an argument why I'm wrong. Do you have the intellectual ability to do so? Or do you just run around attacking posters who hold a different opinion than yourself. Talk about "Tiresome"!

It has zero to do with whether you agree with me or not. It's that I have zero patience or respect for someone who professes to be an ND fan, but then says he is going to root against ND because he doesn't like the coach. I have no need for people like that,

Sorry, I really think it's a lack of intellect to even give thought to what I meant by my comment.

I never really want Notre Dame to lose. I want the best for the program and the kids. I also don't want Notre Dame to stop having high academic standards just to win football games. The honest truth is they have recruited well enough to compete at a high level. Maybe it's not Alabama level, but guess what either has Oregon and they are winning big games. Boise St is winning big games. Utah has won big games.

What I have no patience for is a coach who is doing about as poor a job as humanly possible. You want to blame Van Gorder, who hired the guy? 7 years into his tenure he's yet to deliver a big time bowl win. In fact he's done nothing but get blown out in big time bowl games. He's made mistakes as silly as not kicking the extra point against Northwestern. There is absolutely no excuse for that.

My comment was made for the best of the Notre Dame football program for the next decade. If losing one game like Syracuse is what it takes to get rid of the illness that is plaguing ND football, then maybe it's for the best. I know you have completely shut down and all that's left is personal attacks, but I'd hope at some point maybe you'd atleast realize that I do like ND and want the best for the kids and the school.

Iowa, I don't question that you love ND and want the best for the program. You have concluded that Kelly is far from the best, and that others are available that will do a much better job. I get that. However, don't you think wishing for a ND loss in hopes it will expedite the firing of Kelly, a major step down a very slippery slope? I think most are of the opinion that a loss to the CUSE would not have achieved your desired outcome. So, take your thinking and your cheering to the next level; that is, losing the rest of the games this season while playing poor and uninspired football would probably cause Kelly to be fired. Using your logic, you would root for this. As someone who also loves ND and wants the best for the program and the young men who play the game, I couldn't possibly root against the team for one game, much less the rest of the season. I root for the young men and the University, and hope like hell Kelly has the team playing younger and better at seasons' end, and I hope for a top ten finish next year. I feel Kelly has earned the right to achieve both. Failing this, I will join the growing ranks of fans calling for his replacement.

Bingo.

I poke fun at everyone and myself on this board. The "Never Kelly" squad is just one in many. Read in the "announcers" thread what I said about myself. It's all sarcasm, yes, and humor. What I have found comical is how many would get fired if it was left up to some on this board. One youngster wants the coach at USC fired and he can't even explain why. Then there are the announcers who would get fired and lest we forget Jack Nolan would get fired for not saying BK should get fired. It's one big "Firepalooza" around here with no plan B. Come on now. You gotta see the humor in all of this. Then, there's the endless list of "names" that would replace BK without any thought to contract structures, budgets, finances, and just the simple fact that these guys do not want to coach at ND if they are already making millions and are successful at their current program. Can ND honestly compete with LSU and perhaps USC if all three are in a hiring sweepstakes? There is a tremendous amount of sarcasm and humor in all of this and Brian Regan would have a whole routine just based on this.
Why do you just blatantly lie? Or do you have glaucoma? I responded immediately to you on Saturday as to why I would like to see the USC job open up as well. You ###### ####.

I do appreciate you adding something to the conversation, unlike some who just use personal insults.

You are correct, I have, and many others have come to the realization that Kelly is not the answer that ND needs. I've felt this way since 2013, so it has been even more frustrating. You can give him 2 more years and I'm pretty sure you're gonna get your wish, but I don't know how much more we need to see of this team under achieving. Do I think that ND is able to recruit the kids to be in or near the playoff every single year? NO, do I think losing to Duke and the way we lost to Northwestern last year is acceptable? Well, I don't, but clearly many do, including the people who write those enormous checks.

So yes, I do actually believe that losing the rest of the games this year, if that is what it takes to see Kelly gone, is in the best interest of ND football in the long run. Am I actually sitting down on Saturdays and rooting against them, NO I am not. I even yelled and screamed a couple times watching the exciting you WR's and our seldom used RB, who seems to be on another level, Dexter Williams.

I will continue to say this...we need stop treating the symptoms and start treating the disease or this is going to continue into the next decade.

Iowa - your explanation is the exact same way I feel - if BK wins his 8 or 9 games like he seems capable of doing each year - we are stuck with him for another 5 or 6 years or when he decides to retire or move on. And ND is stuck w/ an under achieving team for another 5 or 6 years. What I just don't get is how so many ND fans want to "settle" and be ok w/ BK as the coach. I have heard a good number of ND grads tell me - "But, we cant get anyone better" "No really good Head Coach wants the ND job" ??? It's like they are afraid of their own shadows and are willing to accept an underachieving 8-4 team every year w/ the once in awhile 10 win team. Just because ND has now misfired on a really good HC now for the last 20 plus years - it does not mean you "settle" - and does not mean you cannot find that truly great HC coach again - who can get ND to Stanford's current level of success or even above the Stanford current level.

The problem is that J.S. hired BK and J..S. is highly regarded as the AD at ND. For as brilliant as JS may be in a lot of things - his extension agreement to BK for 6 more year alone is a colossal mistake on JS's part. So JS has made some mistakes. Unfortunately, since BK has JS's unwavering support and a 6 year extension - BK ain't going no where for a long time. Get used to it.

so tell us, kool-aid kid, your assessment; so when I am correct (again) I can re post it here on this board
these drive by post w/o expanstion do nothing.
Again, Dickhead alert! You have Zero clue about ND can or will do?
include with your reply all the reasons a big name coach will want to leave a location where he is successful to take on the struggles that go with being HC at ND. Be detailed because you are 'oh so wise'.

I question whether ND can get anyone better. You know why? ND is not going to get Nick Saban or Urban Meyer. While I believe those are the top two coaches in the game, they are not going to come to ND. When you get past those two, who is out there? Petersen? I think he's a very good coach, but all indications are that he is a west coast guy. He went to college in California and has been out west ever since. Dabo Swinney? He will be the next coach at his alma mater, Alabama. Herman? He is a hot commodity, but he is a Texas guy and has exactly one year of experience as head coach.
What I am saying is that there are guys out there who might be better than Kelly, but may not be better than Kelly. Kelly has taken to ND to the NC game and won 10 games just last year. Am I convinced Kelly is the guy to take ND to the promised land? Nope. But I'm not convinced that any realistic candidate out there would do better.

I have been an avid ND fan for 40 plus years. For me, I Love ND for reasons that have nothing to do with football. I also am a huge fan of Army, Navy and Air-Force for those same reasons. I believe The Administration is well aware of this dynamic. If ND wins, great, if they don't, we remain loyal. There is the conundrum. But it will never change. Because most of us love ND for reasons that have nothing to do with football success. And always will. GO IRISH!
