Hey all, checking in from on the road in Indianapolis. Here for the Adidas Gauntlet Series.
Got some morning notes for you all, then should have a wrapup notebook tonight followed by more content in the coming days.
Austin Davis vs. Memphis Magic
Just to close the book on this one, watched three-star center Austin Davis for Michigan Mustangs against the Memphis Magic. The 6-10, 250-pound center really did some nice things. Had a nice up-and-under move for a bucket, a particular rebound comes to mind where he displayed good awareness on a quick outlet pass. Good player.
But I wasn’t sold enough that ND should have been the first to offer, as some were thinking here. I’m not saying Davis isn’t good—he is, in my limited viewing. With some work and time, he could eventually make an impact there. But nothing I saw made me think “Wow, Notre Dame completely blew it here.” There are lots of other comparable bigs out there.
Speaking of other bigs…
Some kids I’ve been told to keep an eye on today include..
· Three-star forward AJ Broduer: 6-8, 215 pounds, NE Playaz.
· Five-star center Jarrett Allen: 6-10, 210 pounds, Texas PRO. Ranked No. 16 overall nationally.
· Three-star forward Javin DeLaurier: 6-9, 195 pounds, Team Loaded VA. Ranked No. 117 nationally.
Plus, four-star guard Frank Jackson. 6-2, 180 pounds, ranked No. 31 nationally.
I already saw DeLaurier this morning and was very impressed. Great motor, shot contester, looks to get his teammates involved, can take it to the hole from anywhere off the dribble. I’m definitely going to make a second effort to see him and hopefully video for you guys.
ND rolling deep for T.J. Gibbs
Heard that Notre Dame had both head coach Mike Brey and TWO assistants there T.J. Gibbs last night in Lexington, Ky., at the Nike EYBL event. The 6-3, 185-pound four-star guard has obviously been Notre Dame’s top target, and this just further affirms that. His father told Blue & Gold Illustrated recently that they’ll take an official visit to campus next weekend (link).
