Notre Dame gave up three goals on UMass Lowell's first four shots and it never got much better in the 6-4 defeat on Sunday. The River Hawks won the decisive game in the best of three series and move on to the Boston Garden for the Hockey East semifinals next week. Notre Dame's season ends with an 18-19-5 record.
UMass Lowell scored at 2:22 and 4:17 in the first period to quickly take a 2-0 lead. Senior Robbie Russo tallied at 8:54 to slice the deficit by one, but two more Lowell tallies made it 4-1 at the end of the first period. The lead expanded to as much as 5-1 in the second period off a power play. Russo scored his second goal and 15th overall (the most nationally by a defenseman). Jordan Gross assisted on the play for his 21st of the year and 27th overall point, the most by an freshman defender in the nation. By the time the second period ended, though, the River Hawks made it 6-2
Senior Peter Schneider and then Gross scored the lone goals in the third and final period, the latter with 5:01 remaining. Irish backup goaltender Chad Katunar played the final period in place of freshman Cal Petersen, who five weeks of dominance finally ended this weekend.
