Notre Dame hockey didn't need to fight back from a deficit on Saturday.

The Irish, who completed a comeback victory in overtime on Thursday, never trailed in the back half of a two-game series with Mercyhurst. That's because graduate senior goaltender Ryan Bischel blanked the Lakers in a 5-0 win at Compton Family Ice Arena on Friday night.

Notre Dame (4-3) only needed 37 shots to score five goals. Mercyhurst (0-5) couldn't get any of its 33 shots past Bischel.

The Irish started the scoring with a power-play goal by defenseman Drew Bavaro with 10:30 remaining in the first period. Fellow defenseman Paul Fischer extended the lead to 2-0 with a even-strength goal with 3:11 remaining in the first period.

Forward Landon Slaggert scored the next two goals in the third period to put the game out of reach. Slaggert, a senior, scored two goals on Friday night and extended his season tally to seven.

Freshman forward Brennan Ali finished the Irish scoring with his first career goal, an empty netter with 29 seconds remaining.

Notre Dame will start Big Ten conference play next week with a two-game series at No. 15 Penn State (4-1) on Friday and Saturday.
