Gunner down

The rule is subjective but I have seen plenty of ejections that were not nearly as obvious as that dirty hit.

Definitely. Like when Tuitt got kicked out of that Pitt game a couple of years ago. The QB lowered his head on contact and ST got booted. BS call. That guy who hit Keil s/b ejected though.

Shoulder to shoulder. His head snapping back made it look worse then it was. I mean, it was bad. I'm not trying to insinuate that it wasn't a hard hit. Just that it was a clean hit.

he was already sliding feet first when he got hit.
and then got a shoulder to the head. not a kiel fan, although I do empathize with all of his injuries.
but imo theres no doubt it was a dirty hit

The defender is a human being, not a robot. When the QB begins a slide, and you're only a couple yards away, you don't have time to stop, think, redirect or anything of the sort. You're trying to make a play to prevent the offensive guy from gaining more yards. Kiel waited until the last moment to slide. He should have slid earlier. Even if it was helmet to helmet, its still not dirty because the defender didn't have adequate time to stop the contact from happening.

On review I guess the hitter may not have targeted and in general I think there are too many ejections but it is very very subjective and this one easily could have been unclean

Kiel got a shoulder to his shoulder. The force caused his head to slam into the ground. Therefore no targeting. That was the explanation.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Cincinnati quarterback Gunner Kiel was injured on a high hit in the first quarter of the Bearcats' 53-46 loss to Memphis on Thursday night.

Kiel turned upfield to run on a third-down play and was hit from the side by defensive back Chauncey Lanier.

Kiel's neck and head were immobilized, and he was taken off the field on a cart. He was seen talking with medical personnel and was later taken to Methodist University Hospital, where he was released a short time later, Bearcats sports information director Ryan Koslen later said. Kiel accompanied the team back to Cincinnati.

Bearcats coach Tommy Tuberville told the Cincinnati Enquirer after the game that Kiel hurt his neck.

"He had a little numbness in his hands," Tuberville said. "I've had bad necks, I know what that's about. It's hard to overcome that. We'll go with Hayden [Moore] right now and let Gunner refuel."

Moore, a freshman, passed for a school-record 557 yards and threw four touchdown passes for Cincinnati (2-2, 0-2) in the loss. But all thoughts were with the injured Kiel.

"We just hope Gunner's OK," Tuberville said in his postgame news conference. "That's two weeks in row he's been carted off, and you know, I just feel for him. Two shots to the neck area is pretty tough for a quarterback."

Lanier was initially called for targeting, but a video review showed it was shoulder-to-shoulder contact, and Lanier remained in the game.

Kiel was 7-of-11 for 63 yards before his injury.

Kiel played Thursday after suffering what was initially diagnosed as a mild concussion Saturday when his head slammed into the ground in Cincinnati's victory at Miami of Ohio. Miami's Bryson Albright was called for roughing the passer on the play.

Tuberville said Tuesday that Kiel had some soreness in his neck but had improved and was cleared to play.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

That was one of the more exciting football games I have watched in a while. Absolutely no defense. It was like the defense were in prevent mode from the first quarter on.
