Gov. Newsome throwing a wrench in UCLA move to B10

UCLA has racked up 102 million in athletic department debt over the last three years, but amazingly at least one poster thinks signing a new Big 1o deal won't help with this.

By asking that question you proved you would never understand the answer since it requires common sense...

However I will say if he had a brain in his head he would have said NOTHING that stupid.

But then you sound like you are just as stupid....

The sensible thing to say is what just about EVERYONE ended up doing which was wear the mask into the restaurant; take it off to eat your meal and then put it on to leave.

Is that too hard for you to understand? Probablyis.
Since you’re so intellectually gifted, you should have been a Governor with your eye on being President one day.

Hey if you are so stupid as to not understand just how MORONIC Gruesome was in that case, you really need to ask for a mental evaluation.

Once again, the President of the Board of Regents has said it has no power to block the move. The decision lies at the campus level. (reply to NJ)
I kind of thought the board of regents was the final word as regards anything to do with the University. I guess you learn new things every day.

Say what you will. If you look at the last election, Gavin Newsome has a very very high overall approval rating in California, despite his vocal minority who despise him. And frankly, he speaks for all UC’s, which are public institutions, not just UCLA.

He’s also highly rumored to run for President in possibly 2024, certainly 2028.
Who if he decides to run, won't make it through the primary season. However this is a football thread, not political and was merely pointing out I think the Gov has more important issues to concern himself with the than the Conference affiliation of a public University. The only other Cali public school which is a member of the PAC 12 is Cal, which remains a member of the PAC 12 so not as though the majority of public schools are impacted by UCLA's decision. Why should he care if UCLA leaves the PAC 12 to join the B10? If it means moving the athletic department to the black, the AD and related University officials should be lauded for adding much needed revenue and allow for more student athletes to play sports on the cutting board due to their budget shortfalls. Who'd be against that and why?

UCLA is an important part of the PAC 12 and I believe as a public institution, they will have different rules than the other, private school from LA. That said, while I have no love for the Gov, I hope he is successful in stopping this move. But I don’t know if he has any leg to stand on..for no other reason than other than ND, I enjoy the PAC 12 and it’s rivalries and history.

Beach, I don’t think the intent has anything to do with trying to block UCLA moving to the Big Ten. As you’ve repeatedly stated and shown, the Regents don’t really have the power to do so. However, they do have some control over the purse strings along with the Legislature; and I suspect this is an exercise in throwing a bunch of s..t against the wall to develop a comprehensive report detailing all the ways students and athletes elsewhere in the UC system will be hurt by this move, and then rationalize some form of budget manipulations to move resources from UCLA to other UC Schools. A simple tax the rich and Redistribute scheme so characteristic of the State in general and Newsome in particular.

Latest rumor is that the Big Ten has invited ND to join the Big Ten together with Stanford. That's not exactly illogical, but it's hard to find validation this morning. I am just passing along what I read. The source isn't a crazy person; he has nailed a few things....like the USC-UCLA move to the Big Ten.
When the time comes. I was thinking that adding Stanford to the ACC would also be interesting academically and for all the other sports. The ACC must keep Clemson for the football side of things to make football work.

Well even if he could stop UCLA that doesn't stop USC, so the Pac is going to be different either way.

I think you nailed it.

The funny thing about Newsome he was big time for NIL and for players being paid. But now he is against cfb generating money.

If UCLA was a private association like SC it makes sense. They could act for the interest of UCLA. But they are state property and have to do what is best for California, not their individual piece of it. By dooming the PAC conference they cut off Cal Berkely from the first tier of college athletics. IT also sends a lot of their money out of state; to states that California technically has deemed a boycott. It is one of the best examples of a government body acting like it's own kingdom.

How the hell would that work?

Well in my napkin math, the ACC forms a football-only conference that enables them to add schools that make no geographic sense. The problem is that that would contradict the reason the ACC exists, which is so basketball-first schools can grab a piece of the football pie.

The way Cal set things up is the move is up to the campus administration. Tough luck for Newsome, best he can do he scam some money off it.

Sorry but if you don't think the culture of a conference impacts the overall success of its teams, I question if we are watching the same sport.
And when USC was king of the hill under Pete who else was from the PAC was at or near the top?

It was no more than nobody.

Culture? Ooohhh...

Yeah they just had such a juggernaut football culture then huh.

One coach and it clicked for one team. USC....and USC set the bar in college football to all the other "culture conferences"
Laugh out freaking Loud

But hey...it's the new trendy thing to do...play musical conferences.

My bad...

The culture

newsome supports full term 40 wk abortion my 11 yr old healthy nephew (he is a already starting qb and baseball player at school ) was born at 22 weeks Newsome is the devil and a dictator
he is (was) a member of a ‘cull’; not a party. As to abortion, they favor abortion up to age 99! Ironic that people that favor abortion are all ‘alive’.

That isn't true. The President of UCLA has a contract. He is not an at-will employee. In general California has an "at-will" rule meaning anyone can be fired for anything other than improper reasons, such as race. This rule does not apply to persons with contracts.

Your other posts also miss the pint. It is the UCLA athletic department that is in the hole. The reason football doesn't "make money" for schools is that schools use football revenue to support the other sports. Without that support they would make the school lose money.

I am a little confused by this. Is your argument that there is no benefit for taking in an extra 50 per million a year? If so, could you find some support from your friend google for this amazing proposition? I am sure all the programs fighting to get into the conference with the most tv money would love to learn that there is no benefit.
beach: Under the commies, whatever rules or contracts you may think you have or-live by are an illusion. Newsome is a puppet.

What did the Rose Bowl committee know and when did they know it?

Newsome's not going to block anything unless he agrees to come up with north of $100 million dollars to bail out the athletic department.

UCLA was smart. As they say, it's easier to ask for forgivness than permission. The fewer crooked politicians that knew about this the better (for UCLA).
Newsome has already initiated the move.

I read it. That's why I wrote the second papagraph. "The fewer crooked politicians that knew about this the better (for UCLA)."

If they would have brought this up with the Board of Regents, there would have been so many leaks and people with their own agendas that the Big Ten would have invited Stanford.
How do you know that they haven’t ?

I indicated that this was a possibility on Sunday.

Don‘t be so quick to dismiss the challenge as it has some traction

How do you know that they haven’t ?

Washington and Oregon will be 17 and 18. Stanford has to wait for Notre Dame…….if that day ever comes.

Of course, Notre Dame could request Slippery Rock for number 20, in which case, Stanford is toast. 🙂

This is the idiot that said during covid:
"When at a restaurant, leave your mask on. Then take it off to take a bite. Then put it back on."
Just listen to a couple of his 'performances' and you understand why some compare him to Hitler.
The way he can convince the weak and stupid he is some kind of prophet.
Like he wants everyone to have a electric car when California's grid is already stressed to the point of regular brownouts; and NO one thinks anything is wrong with that. There are no plans to increase the grid; and no one thinks that is a problem. California is Germany of the 1930's.

The "grid". All you do is find an outlet and plug it in silly. The fairy godmother generates the electricity.
