Notre Dame: Brian Kelly notes that the Irish’s next defensive coordinator will likely be given the latitude to bring in his own assistants. “I think it’s reasonable to expect that if you did hire from within there could be change, and if you did hire from outside, I think you have to allow that person to interview and feel comfortable with the staff,” Kelly told ND Insider.

This is exactly how he should approach this, unless he hires from within, which would be a huge mistake IMHO. A DC hire from outside should absolutely have the flexibility to bring his own position coaches with him. He has zero chance of hiring a quality DC from outside if this is not the case.
Yeah but when choosing the coordinator & staff one has to wonder what are the budget constraints. I hope we go out and get a brand name.
As much as I am sick of Kelly and hope for a new HC, I do think a really good DC can bail his ass out. I can't root for a poor season just to be rid of Kelly; and prefer to root for the team with a new outside DC to have a 10 plus win season. Absent Kelly getting canned in the coming weeks, the perfect end result would be a 10 plus win season that allows Kelly to leave the program at his instigation and with his reputation restored.
