I just wanted to share a few thoughts from Pat Garrity's press conference today at Notre Dame Stadium. Garrity is the newly created Men’s & Women’s Basketball General Manager. Garrity will also serve as the primary sports administrator for the men’s program.

I was the Notre Dame men's basketball beat writer for the South Bend Tribune in Pat's junior and senior season as an Irish men's basketball player back in the late '90s, and I covered every one of his games, home and away during those seasons and sometimes was on the same flights with the team by chance going to and from South Bend in the early days in the Big East.

AD Pete Bevacqua spoke first ... and talked about the "why" around creating this position and then the "who" — how Pat Garrity became the ideal candidate. Pat then took questions, and then we had a chance to talk to WBB coach Niele Ivey and MBB coach Micah Shrewsberry off the side after the presser.

I really think this will end up being good for both programs. I'm not a "he won the press conference" kind of guy, because the doesn't necessarily equate to winning on the court. But Pat's values, his vision, his process do matter — and being able to lay those out clearly can only help impress recruits, current players and their families.

I'll have a column later this afternoon about how Garrity can be a game-changer in both programs. Then for tomorrow morning, I'll get into more of the nuts and bolts of the job and the first steps that will happen this summer. If you have any questions, I'll be happy to chop it up with you. Thanks.
