The issue that concerns me is the cumulative affect of "being turned down" repeatedly. We have seen this before in both coordinator and head coaching positions at ND. Granted...some of it is rumors of interest or contact, not necessarily offers that are declined. But....the latter seems to be more pervasive than desired....and it can't all be due to "swinging for a home run hire". I have to direct most of the attention to the administration and Jack...as this impression of being turned down precedes Freeman. In fact...I think Freeman's existence at ND is a product of the same. Not sure how this plays out...but it is no compliment to Notre Dame....and I am trying to be nice.

It sounds to me like Jack needs to be smart enough to have the same type of rolling contracts and buyouts for his top assistants like Utah does. If so this would not be an issue.....Rees buyout would in effect cover the buyout for Ludwig. This is why you fire Jack. He built the new stadium....brought the cash in...now its time for fresh blood.

It does seem like an epic fail. It's fine if you don't want to pay up, but then don't pursue the guy. Did ND really think they were going to bargain him down, and in any event weren't even worried about it if the whole thing fell through?

All the buzz, and all the signs appeared to be of the highly auspicious variety, so observers had every reason to think ND was not only going to get the guy, but that they definitely wanted him. And that was it, it was full steam ahead and damn the torpedoes! Let's get this show on the road, and it's winning time again at old ND.... But maybe the buyout thing is total bullshit, and Ludwig just didn't want to leave. Simple as that. And it's just more fake news from the drive by media.

All's I know is this effin' sucks....

The money was for a buyout not salary. It could be for multiple years. They may not have known.
