I want to go on record in saying that I believe this kid is a good football player, who is being forced into playing the wrong position because ND is so young and inexperienced at safety. This is my prediction for Drue heading forward.

At 6'2, 225lbs, Drue is a few extra calories away from being an ideal SAM linebacker. He's taller than James Onwualu and only 7lbs lighter at this point, to put things into perspective. It's my opinion that Drue is simply a step slow at safety, but he would be a really athletic, 235lb SAM who could cover down in base defense, would be an exceptional coverage man as a linebacker (where as he is average for a safety) and most of all, he would maximize his skill set, which is coming down hill and hitting people and setting the edge of the defense.

Why move a safety in the off season from a position ND is already thin? Cole Luke graduates this year and I'm going going to right off Shaun Crawford until he can stay healthy, but I think Devin Studstill is going to be very good by the end of the season and I think Jalen Elliot is going to come along as well. Nick Watkins will be back at some point, with multiple years left, the staff loves Donte Vaughn and Julian Love, Nick Coleman is learning under fire and Troy Pride is going to be a good one down the road... I haven't even mentioned both Spencer Perry and DJ Morgan, who will be developing and are wildcards. On top of all that youth and athleticism, ND is likely going to bring in two more safeties in the 2017 cycle, and at least one top end corner to add to the mix as well... In short, Tranquill is blocking younger, better suited players from the SS position, but by this time next year, ND should have enough secondary depth to move Drue to the position at which he would be most helpful to the defense.

With the graduation of James Onwualu, the move makes perfect sense. Drue has at a minimum, two more years of eligibility after 2016 and adding 10lbs to a player with his frame isn't difficult in an off season. I have a sneaking suspicion that Tranquill will be a Captain in 2017 and 2018 and ND's starting SAM backer... And what a trio they could be with Morgan, a senior, holding down the middle. Coney, a junior, who actually has the off season to lift and not simply recover from shoulder surgery and Tranquill a senior, finally in the position that best suits him... you would also have depth behind them in Greer Martini, Asmar Bill, and Jamir Jones, who are all seeing time.

Makes sense to me. Hope to see it happen after the season.

I agree. He is not a safety. I would start Jalen Elliott at safety going forward and rotate Tranquil into the rotation at LB.

A step slow at safety and maybe a step quicker at linebacker.

Why no mention of Josh Barajas? Have all of you written him off as a contributor in the next couple of years?

A step slow at safety and maybe a step quicker at linebacker.
IMHO you can't be both. He's clearly too slow for safety, by slow I mean lateral quickness, hell he might run a good 40 but he can't change directions to save his life.

If you're expecting him to be an explosive LB i disagree. I do agree he should be at LB, but I see him being a stronger version of James, not a crazy athletic SAM.

I meant that with all the speedy safeties in college programs , Tranquill might be better at linebacker especially if he has the ability to make quicker reads behind the defensive line

Question....no no, statement...
With BVG at the helm all bets are off.

I say this because our players breaking down by position on defense are absolutely terrible in the technique department. Fundamentals are non existent etc.

It's safe to say the secondary as a whole is coached so piss poor. Tackling is laughable, coverage even worse. This is on BVG.

While you may be correct..it's really not fair to judge this based on the collective cluster **** .. a.k.a our defense

weren't they initially recruiting him to play MLB or something like that anyhow? I always thought he was too small to play there and SS was his spot. Maybe they were right on when initially recruiting him to play LB outta HS

What do you think about looking at Boykin on defense? Maybe at LB like Drue.

Boykin is a big body and with EQ, CJ, Claypool he's not going to play much at receiver.
Also, Justin Brent- I know he has the foot issue- (linebacker or safety)
It's a shame this guy hasn't played at all since arriving on campus.

Another question for you: this defensive line does next to zero~ You lose Rochell- how do they fix it?
We recruited projects the past year with guys severely undersized.

"projects the past year with guys severely undersized...."
they make up for their lack of size by having a lack of speed.

The ND DL is like a 3 month old, when you place them somewhere then look back, they are right where you left them.

Our DB's are not very good, just look at Texas A&M and their secondary and how they run around like their hair is on fire and that should tell you we need better players. Why is it that other teams can start Freshman and they look good, but ours run around lost?

Drew looked very bad yesterday . He missed tackles and was out of position often . A move to linebacker might not hurt but this defense has few if any bright stars

As long as players line cage, trumbetti, martini, Coleman, drue see the field no matter who is at DC the defense will be poor. They wouldn't start for some Mac teams.

Why don't we just recruit good LB's instead of using the plug & play approach?

I don't think the linebackers are the problem. Tevon and Nyles are playing pretty good under the circumstances. James is playing ok. It's the defensive line getting absolutely no push. The linebackers are constantly battling offensive lineman instead of running into free lanes. No clog from d-line makes more traffic for linebackers. Jarron, Daniel, Jerry and Isaac owes the team an apology for their horrible play.

Agree. But we already tried a Plug & Play LB with James Onwaulu and he is just horrible. Can't shed a block to save his life. He is a tweener and should not be on the field which says a lot about Porky's recruiting.
