That ND has to join a conference or be undefeated to get in the playoff?

Last time I checked money still runs the world and no program makes more people more money than ND.

Major population centers like Boston and NYC are not college football loving areas and the only team that gets their interest and eyes on TV sets is ND. In addition ND has tentacles theough the entire US population where people watch to see them win or watch to see them lose if they are a hater.

There used to be a joke in the early 90's that ND would beat their first opponent in early September and then accept their NY Day Bowl Invitation later that night.

If ND wins out they are in...period.

It's no accident that TCU was left out last year after being voted 3 all along as behind closed doors the power brokers wanted OSU instead as they brought in more $$$'s.

A undefeated Baylor or Iowa team will be left out too in exchange for a one loss ND team. Even if the choice was between a one loss Alabama and a one loss ND for the last spot ND would get it as advertisers pay for a national demographic vs a regional one.

A one loss ND team will be in every year. No need to join a conference ever.

I would ask it simply this way.

If you are going to select ND because they have 11 wins and 1 loss vs other teams that have 10 wins and 2 losses.

Would you also not say that teams that have 12 wins and 1 loss (with comparable schedules) would be superior to 11 wins ?

Right now this board is banking on the fact that ND only loss was on the road to the currently number 1 ranked school.

Look at Florida vs Alabama. Alabama is currently number 4. With a loss at home to a team that now has losses to Florida and Memphis. Where as Florida is number 10 with 1 loss to the number 2 scoom (in a tight game) on the road. And if there is anywhere in the country more hostile to play than Clemson. It is LSU.

They have compatible schedules and play in the same conference.

All of that to say there is no way to know how they will treat ND going forward as the rest of the conferences get into their tough conference schedules.
LSU and Bama still play
Clemson and FSU play
TCU and Baylor play
ND and Stanford play
MSU and Ohio State Plat

And you still have 4 conference championship games to play

Provided that there are comparable schedules, generally yes 12-1 is better than 11-1. However, in college football, you rarely have comparable schedules.

The argument has been made several times that completely shuts down, in my opinion, that we need to join a conference. In essence, the playoff will expand to 8 teams in the not too distant future and at least 3 slots will go to non P5 champions. We actually hold the keys to that happening sooner rather than later as any time we get in the final 4 now, two big conferences will be left out. That won't need to happen more than twice before this gets expanded. As such, we probably will stand a better chance of being Top 8 as an independent than we would if we joined a conference and then had to win the conference championship, or get in as a second team from that conference. If we wait this out - it will be desirable to be an independent for purposes of the post-season.

Who exactly are these power brokers? Considering the committee is made up of mostly representatives from conferences, I don't see their arms being twisted to include an independent team unless Notre Dame deserved to go.

An undefeated major conference champion will not get left behind in exchange for a one-loss Notre Dame team. I think people are setting themselves up for disappointment, and the likelihood of many posts complaining about the "haters" (usually and unfortunately spelled with a "z").

Baylor sits at #6 right now. While we are playing Pitt, Wake and BC the next three weeks, they are playing Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and TCU, all in the top 15. If Baylor wins out and goes 12-0, they will be ahead of us in the final ranking. I have no doubt about that. We need the Big 12 champ to have a loss if we want to be ahead of them at the end.

You know them, they hide in shadows, smoke stinky cigars, and talk with raspy voices.
