Derrik Allen

Awesome prospect for us.

He very well could end the rankings as a 5* (he's already a Top50 recruit) and could play CB or FS.

Getting these 2 DBs really helps ease the blow of losing Abedo

Wow, Elko for president! This is the biggest difference from this off season to last off season. Van Garbage could not recruit. Elko has done more for ND in a month than Van Gorder in 3 years. So there is hope. This is a huge commitment, especially coming off a 4-8 season.

BVG was of same attitude towards recruiting as Tenuta was. They just did not get it.

This commit is among the highest rated defensive commits ND has had in recent years.
Max, EV, Beal, Martin, Hayes,he is elite company.

You skipped quite a few, if you're reaching in that range (especially if you're listing guys who eventually decommitted, like Beal/Vanderdoes)
  • Jaylon
  • Teo
  • Tuitt
  • Ishaq
  • Filer
  • Nix
  • Shepard
  • Darby
  • Day
  • Jarron Jones
  • etc.
Allen is a very, very good recruit. But Kelly has actually brought in more talent than some ND fans realize, and prior to BVG, Kelly put a a lot of good (and 1 great) defenses on the field

BVG turned some good potential talent to team that could not cover or tackle

I only list a few...as the kind of company; On that list, unfortunately only TE'O and Smith played up to their expectations (for ND).

That's because ND can recruit elite talent, and yes, both sides of the ball........and will keep most when they show they can win big games. Ya know, WIN BIG GAMES. I believe they would have retained a few last year if it weren't for 4-8.

Yep.

His overly complicated scheme misused talent (Jaylon, Jones, Day, Redlfied) and made a scheme so complex that other talent couldn't emerge (Morgan, Hayes, Rochell)

I'll be excited to see what the defense looks like under a more realisitic CFB coach

It's very, very hard to argue that Tuitt, Day, Nix, or even Jones really underachieved at ND

No one would debate you on Ishaq, Redfield, or Filer

Darby and Shepard obviously are N/A

Someone in ATL that works for me knows I'm a huge ND fan....came up and showed me the commitment. He grew up with the kid....good friends with his dad...said it broke his heart he was not going to USC (Carolina)....but said he is an outstanding kid and player....said we got someone special...said it was a 40 year decision when he asked him why.....Welcome and go IRISH!

Stephon Tuitt far from underachieved. He has what? The second best pass rushing season in ND history as a sophomore? Only Justin Tuck was better. That includes 4 years from Ross Browner and Alan Page, among others (granted, different eras)... He had a sports hernia that nagged at him as a junior (he was still productive) which is the only thing that stopped him from becoming the ND all time leader in sacks... Would have been a lock as a 1st rounder had he been healthy. Pittsburgh was thrilled to get him where they did in the 2nd round.

here and there ND gets an early high ranked commit. It is not just how you start, it is how you finish.
This kid will have to be recruited right up to the final day; something Elko has knowledge of that BVG just gave no attention to. The deep south kids get enormous pressure to play at home. This time last year there was a pretty impressive list.

PJM is the difference between the past 5 classes and the '18 class. A DT with size and athleticism. A once a decade commit for ND.

Hayes is not at the same level as those guys. My buddy's son played against him in high school 2014. Did barely anything and was lazy as all hell. Went to the same school as isiah Wilson 5 star Georgia commit.

Are you talking about Jay Hayes?

I was talking about Dealin Hayes (5* DE/OLB from Michigan)

I like PJ Mustipher as a DT prospect quite a bit....but you're vastly overstating here.

PJ Mustpher isn't on some different level as a DT recruit than:
- Tuitt
- Day
- Nix
- J. Jones
- Ewell
- Rochell (if you consider him a DT)

And that's really just the last 5 years.

A legit Top100 DT type of propsect is probably a 1x/Year type of prospect than 1x/Decade

PJ is a really solid, 4 star, top 100 prospect. Would like to have him. Decker and I are on the same page, however, that Stephon Tuitt he's not.... In fact, I like Darnell Ewell better as a football player, but a tandem of them both in rotation would be perfect... The last time ND had an elite D-line commit was Stephon Tuitt. Nix, Day, Rochell, Ewell and Mustipher are really, really good, but the term elite is thrown around too easily... If ND was to pull Jayson Ademilola, PJ Mustipher, Malik Vann, Tyreke Smith and Devin O'Rourke or John Wagonner, that would be an outstanding DL haul, which ND rarely sees.... But none of them are elite, IMO...

Poly is done.. you won't see shit out of them anymore.
Why is that? I don't know anything about them except they beat my buddy's kids team 2 years in a row and had 2 HUGE kids. One was isiah Wilson and the other was even bigger

I agree with virtually all of this.

Tuitt, Lynch, and on some level Ishaq were all "Elite" DL prospects. For the right scheme I could see someone wanting to argue that Day was also an "elite" DL prospect, but his need to be niche in and of itself may prevent him from being considered an "elite" prospect.

Obviously, I'd love to land an ELITE DL in this class, but I'd be more than happy (much more) with "just" landing 4-5 very good DLs

Imo getting several "good" and/or "very good" players is what ND needs to do at every position on defense, and then try to put together an "elite" defense by getting enough of those numbers to overachieve and using depth/rotation

You then make up for those increased numbers with elite recruiting at OL, TE, WR, and QB so that you don't have to carry quite as many numbers at those positions to still have elite talent and depth

That's the "dream scenario" imo. And this class is well on its way to being in that mold

Coach and a big donor left. The other kid is going to Pitt.
