Freddy Canteen and Cam Smith both listed as starters

Smythe listed as No. 1 TE

Freshman Hinish and Tagovailoa jumped Tiassum and MDT for #2.

If you didn't follow the program closely you might cringe at grad students starting at two wideout positions and at tight end. But the reality is, lots of kids are going to play at all the receiver positions, including tight end.

Was shocked when I saw Canteen as the 1. Is he really better than Sanders and Finke? If yes, then I like what we've got at the slot.

no surprises . A lot of talent everywhere on offense. Think the Dl play with a chip on it's shoulder. I keep saying the same thing RUN the blanking ball. Heck BK just said at the PC that his 3 RB's are pro material. Lets think about this a veteran OLINE 2 AA on the left experience at Center and RG and an explosive Run blocker at RT. Throw in a QB that can run . Gotta respect ESB and Mack downfield adds up too 38-17 IRISH!!

Didn't Kelly say the culture of entitlement was gone? I dont think the depth chart reflects that other than receiver but its still upper classmen over youth.
WR was the only real shocker for me.. not really sure what younger guys you think should be starting? Two freshman interior lineman on the 2-deep. 3/4 secondary starters are true sophomores.

Also Martini OR Coney so no real designated #1.

No surprises at all. Only a tiny bit different than the depth chart prediction I made before camp started.

Stepherson would be starting over Cameron Smith if he wasn't suspended. My guess is that he'll take back his starting role by season's end as long gone as it's only a 4 game suspension... Again, I've posted previously about the difference between a 2-deep and a functional depth chart. Many of the guys that are listed at the #2 spot at a particular position would be the first guy in at another position as well. For example... Claypool is the next receiver in at at either spot outside. Coney is the next LB in at either Buck or Mike. Trumbetti is the next DE in at either Drop or Strong. Jay Hayes is the next DT or NG after Tillery and Bonner, ahead of the freshmen. Bivin is the next guard in at either RG or LG. Lugg will redshirt if possible. Eichenberg is likely the next man in at LT or RT, making Hainsey the 4th tackle. Studstill is the 3rd safety and will play free or strong, ahead of Robertson. In fact, Julia Love is probably the 4th safety if they needed one and Crawford would simply come in at corner.

On top of this, you have to factor in packages... For example, Shaun Crawford and Julian Love will both be on the field together in nickel and dime. So will Daelin Hayes and Julian Okwara.

These depth charts don't mean much. You can expect the 22 starters to play significant minutes and probably about 7-8 other players on offense, as well as 7-8 on defense. There are a number of players listed that will only play in case of injury, in mop up duty, or on special teams.

Guys that will see significant minutes on offense and defense....

Offense

Wimbush
Adams
Jones or Williams
Smythe
Mack
St. Brown
Smith
Claypool
Canteen
Finke
McGlinchey
Nelson
Mustipher
Bars
Kraemer

Defense

Hayes
Hayes
Trumbetti
Okwara
Tillery
Bonner
Amosa or Hinish
Martini
Morgan
Coney
Tranquill
Bilal
Elliott
Coleman
Studstill
Crawford
Love
Watkins

Expect those guys to play the majority of the meaningful minutes, barring injury.

blah blah blah, kind of like when they played joe Schmitt and Niles sat the bench. Yep coach knows best.
Have you attended practices? On what do you base your opinion? And please spare me the star ratings from their high school days. Seems to me Greer played pretty well the past couple of years. Coney will get his playing time also.

As for Schmidt (the proper spelling) and Niles Morgan, do you understand the Mike position and responsibilities? That guy calls all the adjustments for the front seven. Was Niles ready to do that? Did he understand the defense as well as Schmidt? Maybe not, and that's why Joe was the starter.

What this amounts to is your continual assault on any decision made by CK or any member of his staff.

You want Kelly gone now. Yeah, we get that for the 150th time. Guess what? He's still our coach at least for this year. And, he and his staff know way more than you and I.

You do realize that coach is no longer at ND right?
Oh I forgot, you know nothing about ND or football & just talk out your rear like an angry 12 year old.

As for Coney & Martini, if you actually could read & listen you would see that Martini has been the breakout player all summer for ND.

But on your video game Coney is better, right?
They will both play, read the free articles & learn about ND football. Or don't, and continue to live your life like a crybaby complainer.

"no surprises at all." Are you kidding me? Have you ever seen Canteen play? I'm stunned. Wish the kid well but I cannot believe this is a positive development for ND.

Martini was playing well towards the end of last year. I was recently watching the Navy game (had missed most of it originally) and on the Navy QB's 60-yard run, it was Martini who ran him down from behind. He showed some speed there.

I think a lot of receivers will see action.

I haven't seen Canteen play, but he's got Fuller type speed supposedly - could be a nightmare for defenses...

Sounds like Michigan misdiagnosed his shoulder injuries, and never clicked with the new coaching staff... had that issue/surgery myself (torn labrum), and the pain of the condition limits your movement in the shoulders, especially over your head... he had two of them...

anyway, shoulders fixed, fresh start, coaching staff apparently likes what they see - I'll reserve judgement 'til I see him play...

hope he does well - already got his degree, you have to like that...

Yes, I saw Canteen play in limited snaps at Michigan... People crack me up. Do you have any clue how often ND will be in 2 RB sets and 2 TE sets that will take that player off the field. Again, understand function and philosophy over "depth chart". ND will be in as many 1 RB, 2 TE (Aliz'e split out) 2 WR sets as anything. They'll also invert Mack onto the perimeter and put Finke, Smith or Claypool inside. The play Adams and Jones at the same time and motion Tony into the slot as a WR the way Oregon use to with Kenjon Barner and Lamichael James. You have to use your imagination some dude.

My guess is that ND is in 3 true WR looks maybe 20-30% of the time and they can easily play any of Claypool, Boykin, Finke or Sanders as that 3rd WR to compliment St. Brown and Smith as much as they can, Canteen.

If Smith and Canteen have breakout years I wonder if it will encourage other overlooked but experienced players to make a similar move to ND for a degree or grad school -- our version of Junior College transfers. Any (more) Safeties? Corners?

I see that ND didn't offer either one.

I do like that and I think Freddy is a really good kid. Wish him a lot of success.

Sure they do. Are you coach echo's brother? You two talk the same bs. Its my opinion, sorry I don't have to agree with EVERYTHING bk does just because hes the coach like you followers do. Yeah Schmidt knew how to line up the defense, too bad that's all he could do. He missed more tackles and got blown away more than any middle linebacker in Div 1 football.

Watch the games and learn dumba$$. I suppose bk will be a breakout too this year right know it all.

Don't understand this manufactured angst. Martini is an excellent linebacker with great instincts, good tackling skills, and a nose for the ball. Coney is a stud fighting to get plays, and he will see serious action. On offense, we will be running so many sets that the receivers are going to be lining up all over the place, and as IIO says, snap count is a hell of a lot more important than starting, especially for our receivers.

Keys to the game:

  1. Get them to second or third and long then unleash Daelin Hayes and Okwara on their Freshman QBs.
  2. Have Wimbush complete a couple of passes to EQ early in order to get him comfortable and confident...
  3. I want to see improvement in the special teams...

Then just sit back and watch us ram it down their throats with that O-line and our three-headed monster of a backfield.

No, I don't agree with everything BK does, but you don't agree with ANYTHING he does.

FYI - I said last year BK needed to be gone. But, he's still the coach and I hope he succeeds this year because I always root for ND to win.

It is hard for Freshman to start so I didn't have any expectations there. Teo who is one of my favorite players and definitely of the modern era didn't start the first game of his freshman year. Believe it was game 3 or 4. I thought Mack would start at TE. Also thought Khalid Kareem would start over Hayes and Trumbetti. Also Coney over Martini. Hope that answered your question. Go Irish

Love that gameplan!!!! I think it's exactly what we'll see.

I dont know much about Canteen but didn't Smith's wr coach from ASU come to ND? Maybe he knows how productive he can be.

Yeah pretty much, I think he sucks. I do like his coordinator hires, hopefully he stays out of the way and lets them coach.
