Denbrock...?

That says a lot imo. Either Denbrock was going to be demoted to a position coach and he wasn't happy or Denbrock really never truly called the offense and felt it was time to be the only OC. Many people including myself believe BK calls the game for the most part and with BK's job on the line and it certainly is he will not rely on anyone but himself to call the offense this year. is bringing back Quinn a long time assistant to be his new denbrock. I think Denbrock was a good coach and solid guy. Going to Cincy tells me he was pushed out the door. The offense will have plenty of talent . Not sure what to make of this coaching staff.

Since he's the one saying that he's been calling plays since the LSU game; then I have no reason to doubt him. It does say that Coach Kelly is taking the reigns as play caller back, since he's coaching for his job next year. I'll believe it when Denbrock announces that he's leaving for a lateral position. BP is an outstanding recruiter so that covers that area of Denbrock's duties.

Denbrock was a good coach and recruiter. Our receivers blocked very well under his tutelage.
I always thought he would eventually leave for a head coaching job somewhere.
Once it was reported that Kelly sat with Briles and Borges. He probably thought. Let me get out of here.
I wish him success.

ND just lost a fantastic recruiter and the best WR coach in the country. This is no small loss. Obviously Kelly / Quinn are taking over the offense, which is fine, but Denbrock is going to be exceptionally hard to replace as a position coach. Kelly is going to have to find another wonderful recruiter, who can develop WR's.

Really think this impacts ND's ability to hold on to Jordan Pouncey, who I can see flipping to Miami, as well as Oliver Martin, who Denbrock was the lead recruiter on. This class desperately needs a quality WR added to it.

Good luck Mike!

Not surprising there have been rumors he was probably leaving. Great recruiter and coach hopefully this won't impact this class.

It will. And the 2018 class as well. That's just the way it goes with recruiting and coaches moving on.

I wouldn't call a move from Notre Dame to Cincinnati a "lateral position".

He was politely asked to move on or he jumped at the first offer he received from another coach. The latter begs the question "why?".

That will suck for sure because I'm not sure there are any really good recruits we actually lead with. Maybe Oliver Martin but seeing how he was being recruited by Denbrock that will certainly hurt. Simmons maybe.

If we lose any recruits that will really hurt his class since it looks like we will not be adding any impact recruits.

IMO, he was never really going to be the OC at ND, that has always been and always will be Kelly as long as he is the HC.

Play calling does not equal being the OC and IMO is vastly overrated by most fans. If your preparation the week before a game is terrible and the plays you put in the playbook that week are all wrong it doesn't matter who is calling the plays. So why stay at a place where you have the title of OC but you are not given the responsibility for the offense. Your resume will take a hit because other programs will see you were the OC of a bad offense even if you didn't have much input into that offense.

Fickell will let him run his own show at Cinci. He won't be the OC in title only. Fickell is a defensive guy. Mike will have the autonomy he wants to run the offense the way he wants.

This is what I would do if I were Kelly...
Call Tony Alford at Ohio State and make him the OC (not playcaller), WR coach and associate head coach. Help him move towards a HC spot. Let him and Autry Denson run wild down South in recruiting... sadly, I don't see a bold move like that happening. Instead, I can see this...

Brian Kelly: HC / OC /
Jeff Quinn: OC / WR
Mike Elston: Associate HC / TE
Harry Hiestand: OL
Autry Denson: RB

Mike Elko: DC / S
Todd Lyght: CB
Clark Lea: LB
Keith Gilmore: DL

Brian Polian: ST

That would be boring, IMO.

Kelly doesn't appear willing to make a splash on offense, because he's taking back control of it... He bettwr get the hell out of the way and let Elko run the defense.

Not a great group of recruiters.

IIO

Winning is the best recruiter you can have. If this new staff turns it around they'all be good recruiters. They just are not good recruiters on paper, except Polian.

Denson, Lyght and Polian are good recruiters. Elston is really organized and solid as well. They need one more elite guy.

if Denbrock nor Sanford called the plays, then ? Were they there just to have the bus backed over them?

Hiestand is a great recruiter. He doesn't recruit beyond his position group, but we've consistently landed some of the best O-line talent since he's been here and HH is the reason.

I am not a big believer of the famous anonymous source, but one writer did suggest that Denbrock was being stripped of his OC and Assistant Head Coach duties. It sounds plausible if Quinn does indeed join the staff as tight ends coach. If that is true then Coach Denbrock should leave today. It's a significant slap in his face. Quinn was his main man along the way until Kelly came to ND. I would like $100,000 for every time Eric Hansen has said, "We have yet to see the offense that brought Kelly to Cincinnati and ND." I would be a very rich man today. Denbrock obviously wants to stay at ND, but is Kelly ready to pay the price to keep him here? Is he willing to risk his future at ND on the offense we saw last year? The first HUGE test of the off season.

Kelly is not great to work for...........Matt Lafleur gone after 1 year.....Sanford gone after 1 year....Great young coaching...Their opinions didn't matter....

Sanford was here 2 years. Both got promotions.

Has anything definitive been decided with Denbrock? I have seen reports on both sides of the fence.
