Looks like a solid hire. LA native who played for USC. Hopefully he can recruit and develop talent on the field.
ND has no problem recruiting Cali.He is from L.A. so hopefully he can relate to some of the talent in the area that is able to get into ND and convince them why ND is better than the school he went to which is USC
Welcome to District 9
You have to admit its weird having an ex USC player on our sidelines coaching. Especially when we play them each year. He's either really good at what he does or we are just plain desperate.
Mike Sanford, Sr. is a southern cal grad and coached QBs under Davie at ND.
Not weird at all. It happens all over college football. You have to admit its weird having an ex USC player on our sidelines coaching. Especially when we play them each year. He's either really good at what he does or we are just plain desperate.
Makes zero sense. And what did Davie ever accomplish? If you listen to Dabo Swinney its all about heart and love and bring your guts etc. It used to be like that when we won years ago at ND. Now its all about recruiting and xs and os etc. I am not saying I am against the hire but I personally would not bring a USC guy in. A coach should be great at what they do but they gotta love ND to the core as far as i am concerned. Kelly certainly does not qualify as someone who loves ND and the results show it. I would rather bring back an 80 year old Lou Holtz than have a former Trojan. But that's just me.
You get Bama alums coaching at Auburn, Auburn alums coaching at Bama, etc. Not anything to be concerned about. You have to admit its weird having an ex USC player on our sidelines coaching. Very well said. Kelly has been more head than heart. (By the way Saban has done very well without being a Dabo-like cheerleader.) You have to be who you are. But passion of the game and love of teammates is essential. That has been missing since 2012 when guys like Theo Riddick and Manti Te'o played and led their hearts out for the Irish. Kelly needs to set the example. Here's the thing. You need the horses to win. You also need a coach who can push the he right buttons. Right now ND has a pretty good amount of talent especially on the offensive side. The defense can be good with the current group. Now it's up to the coaches to get the players to perform at peak level. This year they underachieved. Now it looks like Kelly is bringing in coaches with similar traits. The coaches are relatively young. Not necessarily inexperienced, just young. They also seem to have a very good rep for recruiting. Last, they fit the mold of a coach who is hungry and passionate. I love all those traits in a coach. Being young they can relate to today's player. That in turn helps recruiting in a big way. Being passionate as a coach doesn't mean yelling and screaming on the sideline. It means having a burning desire to be the best and to not settle for anything other than winning. That attitude will permeate through the program if it is given the time it needs. Having talented players with a burning desire to win and not accept losing, is what ND is missing. My hope is that we see a change in the attitude next season and along with that , elite players take notice. I follow a lot of football. I have been very critical of Kelly as much as anyone. However he is a coach with a lot of pride and a huge ego. I really feel hopeful and encouraged that he will get the program back on track. I think Kelly had a watershed moment after the season as he took inventory. He's not taking things in stride and the new hires are just the first step. So with signing day just a few weeks away, here's to all the Irish fans out there. What tho the odds! Go Irish!!
Wrong reading. Not every coach can be an ND alum, but I guess it does sound kind of weird when our coaches are recruiting a kid hard to come to ND, explaining the benefits and perks if you will - and then the recruit asks "Coach, where did you play college ball?"
It's almost a little hypocritical, when I think about it. Never dawned on me before.
Wrong reading.
Even coaches want the ND experience. Converts can often be the best evangelists. They can see the difference clearly and preach it with conviction.
Usc and ND are traditional rivals. Clemson and Alabma are not. What if Dabo went to South Carolina? Please don't misunderstand me. I am not condemning the hire of DelVaughn. But its something I would not do if I were the coach unless he made it known that ND is in his heart and its not just a stepping stone position. For all we know if he succeeds he could be the next USC coach. Lets see how it plays out. I am a bit uneasy about accepting a former Trojan on our sidelines. Maybe too judgemental?
but generally they leave saying that because of administrative restrictions, ND can no longer recruit at a relevant level.
