Pete Sampson in The Athletic had some interesting data on the recruiting of 5-star recruits:

.....there were 34 five-star prospects last cycle. Sixteen of them signed with Alabama, Ohio State or Clemson. That left 18 remaining five-stars. Thirteen of them signed with an in-state school. Wisconsin, Georgia, Michigan, Maryland and Oklahoma were the five outsiders that signed an out-of-state five-star prospect. Considering Indiana and the Midwest rarely produce five-stars, that’s all part of the challenge for Notre Dame.

It would appear that ND faces three road blocks in their fight to sign elite 5-star recruits:

(1) Notre Dame needs to find a way to beat the triumvirate of Alabama, Ohio State and Clemson that currently have a stranglehold on the signing of Five-Star recruits.

(2) As with all recruits and not just Five-Stars, Notre Dame will always face the problem of the lure of the home state school.

(3) The fact that Indiana specifically and the Midwest generally do not produce a lot of Five-Star recruits. It is always more difficult signing players who live a long way from South Bend. A lot of kids want to play close to home - see Nick Singleton.

But ND must find a way to break through this Five-Star glass ceiling if they are going to take that next step as a true National Championship contender.
