Think about it. In this crazy year, why not?

Going into the final weeks of the season, in terms of the National Championship picture, I suspect that when the CFB rankings come out this week there will be marginal but meaningful differences between the CFB and AP/Coaches Polls in the 4 – 8 spots, if the past few weeks are any indicator.

There are 8-teams now w/varying degrees of opportunity that are 10-1/11-0 with some very interesting combinations of games coming up next week and during the conference championships. And then of course depending upon the level of disconnect (if any), there are the playoffs. Let’s assume that the CFB and AP/Coaches Polls continue to vary. What if AP’s #3 and #4 are CFBs #5 and #6? And, then what if CFBs #1 and #2 lose and AP’s #5 and #6 crush it against Top 10 opponents in their bowl games?

What if Cincinnati is ranked #2 in the AP/Coaches Polls and #5 in the CFB? And the #1 team loses in the playoffs? Seemed at least semi-likely they would be ranked #1 in at least one poll.

I haven’t put a ton of thought into all of this and the chaotic combinations that might be possible, or even if this is really possible, but it feels like w/8 teams positioned as they are… it could be a possible scenario and really makes a case for expanding the playoff picture sooner vs. later.
