Thinking back on two big near misses from the years gone past:
1. IF ONLY: Bercich holds on to the ball on the interception and ND beats BC in 92 and of course goes on to beat A&M in the Cotton Bowl for the title (which they did).
2. IF ONLY: ND doesn't blow a 24 to 0 lead going into halftime against SC in 74 and keeps the pedal to the medal in the Coliseum in the second half. I think the only other loss that year was to Purdue so ND would have gone into the Orange Bowl as a 1-loss team-----then beating Bama in the last seconds with Barnett sealing the deal (kind of like Butler did for NE in this year's Super Bowl) and ND makes a strong case for number 1 in 1974.
