It's not just effort and desire. I don't question the Notre Dame players' desire to win, nor do I question their effort. What's lacking is the coaching, the leadership from the top. Take Wisconsin for instance. That defense is among the best in the country. I'm guessing none of those Badgers on defense was rated higher than the ND players (I could be wrong), and the Badgers' D has been riddled with injuries all year. Are they bitching and moaning about it? No. They go out and play sound fundamentally and beat on teams physically. If the Badgers had more offensive weapons, they would have beaten both Michigan and Ohio State. Teams like you mentioned can get the job done when they are competently coached.
I might go to a Navy game before I go to another ND game. A lot of RKG's there too.
