Is it possible to fire a coach and bring in an inactive coach mid season? I guess what im trying to figure out is If we fired Kelly and brought in like John Gruden or anyone else that isnt in active coaching, can you give them a temp contract, let them be around the team and help. If you see the team improving and the players seem to like him you could have the possibility of signing him? I know it would be hard to gage his impact but its better then nothing? Thoughts? Again i just used Gruden as an example.

lol what? you can hire any head coach you want for however long you want.

Most programs will simply promote an assistant and give him an interim role while they conduct a search for a long-term solution.

Why would Gruden want to come in to a dumpster fire of a team? So he has one week to turn it around before he is embarrassed because the team has poor fundamentals, etc? Gruden or any coach would need a whole off-season to get this team respectable. No high end coach would take claim to this team. You have a better chance of Tommy Rees coaching this team after Miami.

Gruden was just an example.

Like I said, no reputable coach would step into this situation. Hence, the interim coach, which is usually an assistant that doesn't mind trying to prove what he can do. It is like a tryout for a coach who's never been a head coach.

Jon Gruden has never proven to be a top tier coach, anywhere. If I remember correctly, He won a superbowl with Tony Dungy's players....then he went belly up. I might be a bit harsh....but his reputation is his facial expressions...and that's about it.

Gruden would not have the patience or the energy to go recruit 18 year olds. He was an ok head coach at the NFL level. Dont disagree entirely w/ your assessment of JG. But, he did win w/ the Raiders as well. He had some good teams in Oakland. But, he is not a college coach = he would bring in a lot of excitement to start - but then would most likely fizzle out as the ND head coach. Definitely not the answer for ND.

There are others that should be pursued - Herman, Petersen, Fleck, maybe Schiano, Mendenhall, Chryst, Fitzgerald = every one of these guys would be a huge up grade over BK. And there are plenty of others also way better than BK out there. But, until BK is fired all this new coach talk is a mute point,

Jack is not gonna fire BK.

^ correct

"losing becomes us"

The most telling sign of the immediate future will be how the '17 recruiting class ends up.
Recruiting is the lifeblood of the program and the program is close to being on life support as of now!
If this class does not finish HUGE, then "Code Blue!" and 'cannot resuscitate! is the diagnosis!

The problem is that kids want to come to ND in spite of who the coach is for the 40 year decision. BK may still be able to recruit a class good enough to get him his job saving 8 or 9 wins a season.

BK is not going anywhere for a long time. GET USED TO IT !

I don't see that as a problem at all. I think its a real plus that kids look beyond success on the gridiron and recognize that a Notre Dame education is a valuable asset to have as one goes through life.

We don't know if any of those "names" would be an upgrade because BK was the hot item 7 years ago and had major offers. He cast his lot with the Tulsa decision and hasn't been able to shake that since. Coaching at ND is a lot more grueling than coaching at Houston. But, you never know with a hire. I do know that next season, ND returns a boat load of players on offense and defense. That's if everyone returns. So, it's all there in 2017 and Jack has to make a decision on whether he trusts BK with that team or not. I think he does with stipulations. That alone makes me nervous.

Its a problem for me since I feel that BK is not the answer as a quality head football coach for ND.

And he may be able to hang onto his job for another 2 or 3 or 5 years - by winning 8 or 9 games a year.

I Can guarantee you this - if he does hang on - enjoy the wasted timeouts / poor special teams play / poor red zone offense / an offense and defense w/ no identity.

And his customary blowing games to inferior teams at least once or twice per season.

I think its great kids and good players want to come to ND for the 40 year decision - just also proves that if the AD can hire a quality head coach - who can coach at a high level - that the recruiting piece will also fall into place and that ND can return to glory.

I don't think that one has more than a peripheral relation to the other.

NDSMC - question - do you feel BK is the right man for the job as Head football coach at ND ?

If I were Swarbrick, I would make a move, but only if I knew I could get someone like Petersen or Stoops. Unless I could get a top line candidate, I would not make a move. I am not a fan of making a change for its own sake. That said, I think there is about a 2% chance that Kelly will not be on the ND sidelines next season.

Respect that reasoning. Petersen would be a home run - but he's pretty locked into Wa.

I'm at the point - where I feel BK is no longer the answer and sometimes you need to make a change and a chance on a new coach. 6 years has been long enough.

IB, based on some of your posts, I think you recognize that Kelly will be back next year. I suffered through the Faust years, the Davie years, the Willingham years, and the Weis years. Hell, when I attended ND, people (at least the students) were clamoring to get rid of Dan Devine. Over 45+ years of following ND football very closely, it has become obvious that ND moves very, very slowly when it comes to making coaching changes. I would be very surprised if ND makes a coaching change at the end of this season.

Your right NDSMC. In some respects if BK were to last another 2 or 3 years then maybe C.Petersen would then be available. (After putting in a fair amount of time at Wa. Maybe he'd be willing to take on one last great challenge as a head coach )

C.Petersen is my favorite coach in College Football. His personality and his coaching ability would make him the perfect fit at ND.

He would take us to a NC game. And when he got there - his team would be ready to play.
