What Coach Kelly has "learned" from his 4 & 8 season and his overall woeful ND tenure is small things like having the players focus on their assignments this season instead of focusing on production will be the reason they will rebound this year.

That must be it! Because it couldn't possibly be big stupid things from last year alone like:
  • Hiring his buddy as defensive coordinator who couldn't coach and made no effort to recruit. Then finally firing him mid year instead of the previous off-season like he should have. However the university still has to eat his remaining 2.5 years of contract at $1MM per that is mere pocket change compared to former ND blunders like paying Charlie Weis millions for a near decade to go away.
  • Playing two quarterbacks in the opening game in spite of no history of any team being consistently successful with the two quarterback rotation game plan.
  • Having a weak team physically that never won the line of scrimmage battle on either side of the line and team with an epidemic of season ending injuries for a 2nd year in a row.
  • A pass happy offense with no effective running game that led to your NFL pedigree QB to digress, press, throw a lot of interceptions and drop to the 2nd round.
  • Passing non-stop in a hurricane.
  • Embarrassing post game press conferences where he laid sole blame on the players and his assistants but never himself in spite of him being the main culprit.
Yes you're Bill Belichick who never makes stupid, head scratching coaching blunders and the following year it's a back to a focus on the little things to get you back to the promise land.

All of the above would be laughable if it wasn't so sad.

The good news is the university didn't want to eat another contract of a head coach so they instead stripped you of everything but your title. They in turn also hand picked competent coaches to surround you so you couldn't do something else stupid like hiring Bob Diaco again as your d coordinator.

ND is very talented and will be much better this year. However please don't take credit for the rebound as it happened in spite of you being our head coach.

.

More focus on executing a script instead of winning the game? Has the man learned nothing from his players that transferred to winning programs?

So if ND wins the NC, Kelly deserves zero credit; but if they have a mediocre 8-4 for example, he deserves all the blame. Expected to start seeing these kind of posts as the season nears. Kelly should be held to account and assigned credit or blame under any scenario.

You know Telx it's such nonsense that drove Leahy, Parseghian, and Devine into early retirement. I try very hard to remember the football team really belongs to the student body and we get the opportunity to share in that journey. I am impressed by Kelly's putting the failures of last year squarely on himself. This is how you build winning football programs. Success built on success, year after year.

The guy takes the team to the National Championship game and an undefeated regular season; three years later he's a field goal away from the playoffs; lays an egg the next year but does some personal and program wide soul searching and then completely overhauls the program. You may want to crucify him, but I see a man committed to doing whatever it takes to make his team succeed. On top of all that, I think he's a fine representative of the University. I hope Kelly finds the success he deserves.

Kelly has been a mixed bag of results.
He had two very good years and the rest was nothing to write home about. He's flat out lost about 10 games an elite coach wouldn't have lost.
I think he has recruited well (thin at d/line) but 2018& 2019 are going great so far.
and certainly has pushed and received development with facilities and staff enhancements.

All of that being said, I think barring a disaster. Kelly was given another couple years by Jack.
You wouldn't have brought all of those coaches in for one year only.
You certainly wouldn't want a new coach in 2018. Here's Michigan, USC, FSU, Stanford and at VA Tech. Go get em kid. Row that boat. Lmao.

My hope has always been for Kelly to be ultra successful. Hopefully, we play Power football, our d-coordinator is as advertised. He lets his coaches coach. He kicks extra points and only goes for two when absolutely necessary and Notre Dame's strength and science has closed the gap or is boarding on elite status soon and that the administration does something to attain more defensive lineman like the haul we have committed in 2018/ 2019. Year after year and not once in awhile.

Bottom line: Kelly is here at least two more years and I'm rooting like hell for Kelly and this team no matter what.

Gotta love the hindsighters.

I think Kelly is a good coach. However, quite a few of his decisions have directly resulted in losses. Tulsa, Northwestern, NC State just to name a few. Kelly should have several 10 win seasons. Sometimes I think he puts too much stock in " how we win" instead of do whatever it takes to win. I know he likes to throw. But come on, throwing 50 times in a hurricane? That's why they lost. Or how about Tulsa. You are already in field goal range to kick the game winner. Instead you take your 18 year old QB and try to throw a TD and it backfires. Did it really matter at that point how they won? I mean kick the field goal. The odds are much better. But he's hell bent on winning with a certain style. I think that is and has been his Achilles heel. If he can learn to adjust then he'll be fine. Maybe this will be a different Kelly this year. Then again maybe not.

...he just is not a very good coach; and overall, all things considered, for ND, he has in hindsight been a disappointment.

The only hopes that ND and indirectly Kelly have lie with the S&C and defensive hires. If those performances are not up to the hype, then ND just continues it's slide.

It's confusing...........some here say Kelly takes the blame while others say he blames the players and others. Which is it? Or is it a little of both.........blames others, then later takes the blame himself?

hindsight is how you objectively measure performance vs your goals and benchmarks!

Or, you can just pretend everything is honky dorrie.

Don't watch I am pretty sure the program will survive without you.

Touchy touchy, how dare anyone state the truth about bk. Get your head out of the sand. Just because some of us don't think bk is a good coach(59-31 is mediocre in my book) is no reason for us not to watch/cheer ND football.

Why? The truth hurts..........that post was right on.
What's the point of criticism after the fact ? Has nothing to do with the upcoming season. Continue to ignore all the off season positives. I choose to be optimistic.

I like what I have seen this off-season also, however I think once the chips are down, bk will start getting his nose in everything instead of letting his coaches coach. Its not something he will be able to handle, its in his blood, he won't change.

That's how you learn, maybe bk will but I doubt it.

Actually I thought Kelly showed a great deal of restraint after joining the defense last year on Monday before the hurricane game. The defensive side started improving and the offense sputtered it's way home. 4-8 records have a way of distorting a coach's record. We've come this far with him. I don't think a few more seasons can hurt with what's happening right now within the program.

one thing we all have in common here is that everyone wants to se ND win .I'm not a BK fan at all but would be to be wrong every year . Make no mistake about it this is it for him . Either these hires show great improvement and the recruiting continues to flourish or he is gone. The schedule is very demanding. IMO they have to win the 1st 4 games . The Georgia game MUST be the game that gets attention of the country. at 4-0 it can be a special year.

If you remember when sweet Lou took over the D at times, they played some great games. bk knows nothing about defense and for being a so called "offensive guru" he doesn't know much about that either.

Kelly sucks. He will never have what it takes. So he learned something. What's that worth? One win?

Don't worry about it. It's not your concern.

BK played lb at Assumption College.

Kelly served as DC at GVS before taking over as HC.

At best a totally uninspiring and meaningless "gimmick" that pretty well flows with his tenure at ND. Right up there with trying to imitate the Lone Ranger and riding that stupid horse into training camp.

The number of games Kelly has lost because of poor preparation or bonehead strategizing really is amazing. From the wild heave into the endzone against Tulsa when they were in chip FG territory, to the Little Giants play against MSU, to going for a stupid 2 point play and allowing Northwestern to get the easiest two scores to tie it in regulation and win it in overtime, to throwing into a hurricane against NC State (and believe me, there's more I could list), is a mindboggling litany of frustration. Despite all that, I'm still optimistic about this year. For better or worse, he's our head coach and he seems to have made some shrewd adjustments. Time will tell.
