Exactly why you don't get to excited about recruits until they actually arrive on campus. Another example of why you should also recruit behind anybody who is not yet on campus. It works both ways. Wish him well and move on.

Yup no one is committed until they sign. As I like to say “ strongly considering “ until they actually sign the LOI
No one is committed even after they sign.
The vast vast majority who verbal to Notre Dame........sign with Notre Dame.

Despite all the comments, Notre Dame has a solid system down where most of their commits do it early and then stick. It comes at the expense of upside though, because those super elite 40+ offer talents usually want to take all their visits and choose near the end. ND doesn't tolerate it though, and it shows on the roster and ultimately on the field.
There's 5 guys in this class that would really suck to lose. And May wasn't one of them

The transfer portal solves problems; meaning, there's not one recruit that is irreplaceable .
Transfer portal isnt a fix all solution. It plugs gaps for 1 year. Not a strategy for long term
We have a QB talent that we almost never land. You have to keep him. Irreplaceable
All I am saying is that no one recruit will make or break a football program. Including Deuce Knight. Not in today's CFB.

His decommit was not a surprise. He’s been openly talking about other colleges offers and his interest for several weeks now. He is a quality player with good upside potential, and so I hate losing him; but we are in good shape with a couple other rush ends who are just as good or better. Wish him well as he finds a more comfortable opportunity closer to home.
