I think everyone hopes that they are good. This kid has 1 year OC experience under the watchful eye of his mentor. At 33 there is not much of a resume..... Elko is no big deal either. Sanford was supposed to turn the room upside down. I doubt Long is better than he was.... Agree on kelly...He's a menace to team success...

I believe he is a coach in some manor, but in No way a teacher of youngnen.

I have made several attempts to try and reach a common ground but each time rejected harshly.

Kelly likes QB's who turn it over ..... i.e...... Tommy Turnover ..... as good as Kizer was ... and he was good ... at times .... Kizer made some awful turnovers ..... oh ... and the guy who had zero turnovers will be transferring
IMO Kizer was an outstanding QB, but the turnover trademark turned it's head again
Now coach Long will try to make a difference with another pass happy scheme, at least from what I've read.
Will he be the one to correct the TO issues? Even if he does that still puts an offense on the field that will either move down it quickly, or 3 and outs. Both do the defense no favors, and you will need a defense with a deep bench inorder to have fresh personnel on the field throughout the game.
That's a tall order for the new DC
DIP...you touched on one of my main criticisms of Kelly's style of play. You need to have a talented and deep front seven on defense if you have an offense that either scores or punts quickly, and we have neither. We have enough talent for Elko to put a decent defense on the field, better than any play under BVG, but not the talent or depth to force a lot of three and out for opposing offenses. We can know a lot about Long's offensive sets, and the fact the Memphis offense ran almost exactly fifty percent of the time, but we don't know how this will translate to ND since Kelly will be calling the plays.
IMO Kizer was a very good QB most of the time .... an avg QB some of the time .... an awful QB some of the time ... i.e. ..... inconsistent .... IMO probably could've been more consistent with a more balanced offense .... i.e. .... a more consistent running game
Totally agree on the effect the offense has on the defense .... defense has to improve drastically in its' ability to stuff the run .... hard to get off the field when opposing offenses get 2nd and short and 3rd and short ... all the time
When I saw the OC hire .... I thought .... Memphis? ... how can a guy be rated a top 25 recruiter by anybody from Memphis? .... seriously? .... does he get Memphis their share of really good 3 stars? ... none the less IIO gives him his 2 thumbs up so I have to digress for now on that ..... regardless of the hire I don't think anyone thinks Kelly is going to give this coach room to do his thing and in the end Kelly will screw it up ..... we'll have to wait and see ... unfortunately
Either way the pressure will be on one or the other probably both.
Coach Kelly use to not be shy about putting a different QB in from time to time, but that change after Rees took over.
Maybe both, and an unknown might get plenty of game time experience

Probably .... I think any time BK has declared that there will be a QB competition .... publicly .... IMO ... in reality BK already knows who he wants to play and will look for the 1st excuse he can use to hand the job to the guy he wants .... and leave it with his guy come hell or high water ..... translation .... whoever the QB is will be who Kelly wants .... right or wrong ... often wrong

Yeah, Long is striking fear in our opponents. His resume is dwarfed by Sanford's. So, we went backwards there. As for Elko, who knew that the key to a dominating defense at ND resided at Wake Forest? Seriously, how many years is it going to take him to install his "Domesday D"? I can't wait to hear the excuses....

As far as the OC, I don't know what it is right now so I'm keeping an open mind. Sanford did what he needed at ND and was rewarded with a head coaching position. I hope Long follows that same path to a better position. It will mean he did well at ND.
