CBS Sports ranks top FB coaches heading into 2016

In order, Saban, Meyer, Harbaugh, Chris Petersen, Kelly and/or Shaw would be my top six. I know Les Miles and Fischer have won a title, but they operate under zero restrictions. Most coaches in that top 25 list could win a title given similar circumstances.

Seriously?

the back side of that list may have had some "Group W bench" candidates?

Echo - Harbaugh being in the top three is obviously based on potential, his 2010 Stanford team was the best opponent to play at ND in the Kelly era. Of course, Harbaugh is also borderline crazy so we'll see how long he lasts.

i just think you have to actually accomplished something at that level to be high on the list.

Harbaugh should easily be in top 5. If you were being honest, you'd admit there are very, very few CFB fans who would choose either Patterson or Dantonio as their HC over Harbaugh (though both are terrific coaches in their own right and deservedly in top tier). Meyer probably has upper hand on Saban given age disparity.

As for accomplishments? In 5 years as a D1 head coach Harbaugh has an Orange Bowl win in 2011 when his Stanford team dismantled VaTech 40-12. And, of course, in year 1 his Michigan team obliterated Florida 41-7 in the 2016 Citrus Bowl. Those are two QUALITY bowl wins in 5 years in Division 1.

By contrast, Brian KeLLLy has been a D1 head coach 13 years. It's very difficult to say what is his best bowl win. Is it ND's (9-4) 29-16 win over Rutgers in the 2013 Pinstripe Bowl or ND's (8-5) 2014 Music City Bowl win over LSU? Heck, maybe it's Cincinnati's (10-3) win over Southern Miss in the papajohns.com Bowl back in 2007. You tell me.

So.....and Orange Bow win over Va. Tech and an Citrus Bowl win over a mediocre Florida team gets Jim top 5......are you really trying to sell that here....heck it may be hard to sell on the Michigan board.

those are hardly top 5 accomplishments. i'd take dantonio over harbaugh every day. not even close in my mind. i'd take dantonio over kelly too. i'll take getting to the national championship game over winning a meaningless bowl game anytime.

I would put Mark Dantonio over Brian Kelly. But Harbaugh? And Patterson #3? Stoops is better then Patterson. Kelly over Art Briles also.

Pundits are predicting the ACC Champion will be in the CFB playoffs. That says a lot about both Fisher and Swinney. Their W/L records speak for themselves.

Read the list and read what others are saying as well............just read (with an open mind).

I read the list the idea that the ACC champ would make the playoff speaks to perception of the conference not to the quality of coaches. It's a nice logical fallacy you used to bring up Jimbo in another thread but it's poor reasoning.

Here is what one pundit says while others are echoing the same (the assumption that coaching plays a big role is not a big leap). Keep in mind it was Fisher that made recruiting and coaching up both Dalvin Cook and Deondre Francois a priority.

5 Teams To Bet On To Win The 2016 National Championship, Right Now
Andrew Holleran, College Spun
3. Florida State

Odds: 18-to-1

The Seminoles should be one of the country’s most-talented teams in 2016. FSU returns a lot from a 10-win team, a team that was one of the youngest in the nation. Most importantly, Jimbo Fisher’s squad will get to rely on a running back who is perhaps the best player in the country in Dalvin Cook.

The quarterback position is a question mark, though, so the Seminoles aren’t being viewed as one of the favorites to win it all.

There’s talent to be groomed under center in Deondre Francois, a four-star quarterback in the 2015 class who could take over the QB spot in the season to come. If he can live up to the hype, or, really, come anywhere close to it, Florida State could find itself in the College Football Playoff, competing for a championship.

I like their odds at 18-to-1 a lot.

It took him 5 games to beat the #1 team in the country. His beating carroll's usc cheating juggernaut was historic.

Congrats you posted an article that has nothing to do with this thread in response to being called out for a lame attempt to hijack the thread...

If you are counting W/L's over the past 5 years (and some would say that's not important?) it would come down to Meyer, Saban and Fisher. But again, there are those that think other criteria are more important.

Highjacking?? No, merely pointed out the coaching abilities of the ACC. There are lots of different opinions of coaching abilities. ND plays in the ACC (5 games). Nuff said.

i think it's a fair rating. i'd put him in the 8-12 range.
Oddly, that's also his win range. Hopefully, he can crank something up. A nice 2X4 to bvg's head would be a good start...

Wow! kelly moved up a spot.

"If ranking coaches who turn the purplest on the sidelines, Kelly would be a clear winner."

van gorder has been a total failure. He thinks he's playing checkers while everyone else is playing chess. He has set an ND season record for giving up the most ppg. His also holds the record for worst back to back ppg against seasons... He is dumb. Seriously, he is stupid. He also has zero personality. So, he has almost no communication skills and his defense needs an interpreter. Great combo.... Uncle Rico would be a better coach.....

Can’t put my finger on it but Kelly is missing something as a coach.

Trust, loyalty, math skills, consistency, can't establish an identity, sets a poor example, on any battlefield he's expendable..... that's just for starters....
