Well, after a 49-14 ass kicking of USC, I noticed that at least one of our polite NC State fans posted he is not convinced that Notre Dame is 49-14 vs USC good because USC looked awful from the first snap.

So I got to thinking about that first USC snap and thought what I saw was great penetration by Tillery, D. Hayes, and Coney that left no room for error. Even with a clean handoff to take the ball the other direction, J. Hayes had great position on the edge. That play was going nowhere because of a fast start by the D.

The D is forcing turnovers and capitalizing on mistakes. That can make an offense look awful at times.

Here's the replay of the game.

Re-watched some of the game. We were getting heat with four man and even three man rushes. And unlike past years, we don't seem to rely on just one playmaker (hello Sheldon Day) on defense getting to the QB. It's a deep defensive line.

This is all that needs to be said...

There are so many players that played really good games against USC, I really can’t single any one player out. Coney was an absolute beast, made GREAT hits like the one above, played his position responsibilities without the occasional mental lapses, and will in fact be our best linebacker if he plays this well the rest of the season. Tillery had another really dominant game, and he is finally playing like we all hoped when he arrived on campus. Tranquil is playing like a mad rover, and like the position was specifically created with him in mind. Bonner is damn near the forgotten man, and yet he was disrupting his side with quick forceful moves all night. Trumbetti was used all over the line and did his part well, and Kramer is emerging to be a force to be reckoned with this year, not waiting for next year. And how can I not mention Morgan and Love and Pride and ....... A fantastic TEAM effort coached and played at exceptional levels.

That is my guy Tevon Coney ! I have been saying he is our best linebacker all year and no one agrees with me. Maybe they will start. He reminds me of Mike Singletary !

He's definitely a really good one. Re watch the defensive plays, however, and focus on how borderline perfect Nyles Morgan is in all of his run fits... Tillery / Morgan right up the middle has been glorious to watch from a coaching perspective.

Tevon was second in tackles with far less minutes than the other starting linebackers and he was making big plays every week, (now he is #1 in tackles) He is aggressive and overshoots occasionally but Nyles does that all the time. Look what happens when they actually start him.
Tevon made some big plays like in one game he sacked the QB for a ten yard loss in the redzone that kept the other team from getting back in the game. Tevon is a SEC type LB.. Greer Martini is very good too. And Tranquil at Rover is a beast ! Nyles hits like a Mac truck--he just needs to tackle better by wrapping his arms..

USC beat Stanford (42-24), Cal, a very good defensive team in Texas (ask Okst and OK.), Utah and lost on the last play of the game to Washington St. They had slow starts in many of those games but Darnold brought them back for wins (or a near win vs. WS.)

28-0 at the end of the first half was a statement -- 49-14 proved this team has the goods (when Darnold was Darnold in the 3rd Quarter, ND scored right with them to bury any hopes of a comeback.) Maybe we are just that good.

Don't believe the hype. Just play week to week -- respect your opponent and do the work to beat them.

Stu, do you ever watch the Drue Tranquill interviews? He always says that the teams goal is to prepare in a way to dominate every opponent and when they get on the field to have the opponents meet ND'S preparation.
He is using the word Dominate. I like that attitude.
