Three different Yellow Jackets finished with 3 RBI's or more, as Georgia Tech defeated Notre Dame 11-7 on Saturday afternoon in Atlanta, tying the series at 1-1.
Starting Irish pitcher Brandon Bielak gave up eight hits and six runs through 4-2/3 innings.
Trailing 6-2 entering the top of the sixth inning, Notre Dame had a good opportunity to narrow or even the score. Senior Ryan Bull opened the inning with a double, and senior Robert Youngdahl followed with a double of his own, bringing Bull to third.
Sophomore Ryan Lidge struck out swinging, but senior Phil Mosey reached first with a walk, loading the bases with only one out.
Junior Lane Richards singled to left field, scoring Bull to cut the lead to 6-3, and keeping the bases loaded with still only one out.
But junior Ricky Sanchez struck out looking, and freshman Jake Johnson flied out to center field, leaving three men on.
Tech then increased their lead to 7-3 in the bottom of the sixth. The Irish pulled within two at 7-5 in the seventh, but the Yellow Jackets added four more runs in the eighth, taking a more out-of-reach 11-5 lead.
Notes[/I]:
Notre Dame falls to 11-2 on the season, ending their 10-game win streak.
Tomorrow's series-deciding matchup is junior Nick McCarty (2-0, 1.74 ERA) vs. Brandon Gold (1-0, 1.26 ERA) for the Yellow Jackets.
Irish star second baseman Cavan Biggio went hitless on Saturday, finishing 0-for-5. Combine that with Friday's 1-for-5 outing, he's now only 1-for-10 in the series, lowering his season batting average to .440.
Freshman outfielder Jake Johnson has yet to play a game in his Irish career without getting on-base. He's now reached a base in all 13 games played this year.
